Insta360 X4 vs Ricoh Theta Z1: Specs and RAW Tour Workflow
Technical comparison · A hybrid camera or a dedicated still-tour workflow?
X4 brings 8K video, removable power and a large touchscreen. Z1 brings selectable apertures and 1-inch-type sensors. Both list DNG capture, but that shared format does not make their processing routes or finished panoramas equivalent.
Start with whether video is part of the job
For an operator who needs both travel clips and property panoramas, X4 covers substantially more listed video modes. For a photographer concentrating on deliberate interior stills, Z1's aperture selection and established RAW development/stitching route deserve a separate evaluation. Neither role can be reduced to the maximum megapixel count.
If you already own one, identify the missing deliverable before replacing it. Adding an action-video camera to a still-tour kit is a different decision from changing the camera used for every client room.
Photo specifications: output size versus capture control

Sources: Insta360 hardware, shooting specifications, X4 product page and Z1 manual. RAW dimensions are not the dimensions of a final stitched JPEG. Minimum focus distance does not promise a clean seam next to a railing or doorframe.
Maximum listed panorama/JPEG width
X4 — 11,904 pixels
Z1 JPEG — 6,720 pixels
X4 bracketing and Z1 aperture are different tools
The multi-model AEB guide directs X4 users to 360 HDR Photo, 18 MP and PureShot + RAW before choosing brackets. It explicitly excludes AEB at 72 MP. A specification sheet that shows only “72 MP, DNG, HDR” misses this important combination restriction.
Z1 documents aperture-priority as well as shutter-priority, ISO-priority, manual and automatic exposure, with smartphone control needed to change modes and manual settings. Aperture selection changes the capture decision; it is not evidence that every Z1 exposure will retain more useful detail.
Ricoh's Stitcher FAQ describes developing a DNG into a dual-fisheye JPEG or TIFF before stitching. Stitcher works standalone or as a Lightroom Classic plug-in; Lightroom 13.4 is a listed confirmed version, not a promise about every later release. Keep the RAW master and record development settings so future revisions do not begin from a compressed client export.
Test the cameras against a specific room-delivery requirement: window view, shadow texture, straight edges near seams, moving curtains and total editing time. Compare completed spheres at the same viewing size. This reveals whether a capture restriction or processing step matters to your work without inventing a universal image-quality winner.
Video specifications are more clearly separated
| Parameter | X4 | Theta Z1 |
|---|---|---|
| 8K: 7680 × 3840 | 24/ | Not listed |
| 5.7K: 5760 × 2880 | 24/ | Not listed |
| 5.7K+ mode | 5760 × 2880; 24/ | Not listed |
| 4K: 3840 × 1920 | 24/ | 29.97 fps |
| 2K: 1920 × 960 | Not listed as ordinary video | 29.97 fps |
| Format / codec | INSV; H.264/H.265 | MP4; H.264 |
| Maximum bitrate | 200 Mbps | 56 Mbps at 4K; 16 Mbps at 2K in 51GB launch specification |
| Profiles | Standard, Vivid, Flat | Equivalent log/flat options not established here |
| Audio | 48 kHz, 16-bit AAC | AAC-LC mono plus four-channel spatial PCM |
Z1 bitrate figures are from Ricoh's 51GB launch specification. They are not live-stream bitrates. More pixels across an entire sphere do not translate directly into the same resolution for a narrow reframed crop.
X4 offers FlowState and 360° Horizon Lock. Its Active HDR mode is separate from ordinary recording, so 8K30 must not be described as 8K Active HDR. The shared table does not support PureVideo or InstaFrame for X4.
Flat video and timelapse are separate deliverables
X4's shooting table lists ordinary single-lens 4K, 2.7K and 1080p at 24/25/30/50/60 fps. FreeFrame records square 3840 × 3840 at up to 30 fps or lower square resolutions at up to 60 fps. Me Mode reaches 4K30 or 2.7K/1080p120. The cited Z1 manual does not establish equivalent modes.
The X4 timelapse guide lists 11K, 8K and 5.7K playback at 30 fps, with capture intervals of 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 30, 60 and 120 seconds depending on resolution. Its high-resolution FAQ is unclear at the one-second boundary; confirm that combination on the camera. Exact X4 TimeShift and Bullet Time limits have not been verified here. Z1's interval and interval-composite still modes should not be relabelled as equivalent 11K video.
For construction, an accelerated sequence and a dated, navigable panorama record serve different audiences. Capture and retain the material required for each; a promotional crop cannot later recover the missing sphere.
Power, storage and field hardware
| Parameter | X4 | Theta Z1 |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 203 g | 182 g |
| Width × height × depth | 46 × 123.6 × 37.6 mm, including lenses | 48 × 132.5 × 29.7 mm |
| Display | 2.5-inch LCD; 440 × 696 | Status OLED; not a comparable live-view touchscreen |
| Power | Removable 2290 mAh battery | Built-in rechargeable battery |
| Storage | microSD; UHS-I V30 or faster | Internal: about 19 GB original or 51 GB variant |
| USB / Bluetooth | USB-C 3.0 / BLE 5.2 | USB-C 3.0 / Bluetooth 4.2 |
| Wi-Fi listing | 5 GHz; 802.11a/n/ac | 2.4/ |
| Operating temperature | −20–40°C | 0–40°C |
| Body waterproof depth | 10 m | No rating established by cited manual |
X4's hardware table claims about 75 minutes at 8K30 or 135 at 5.7K30 using laboratory conditions, High bitrate, screen off, Wi-Fi Auto and AI Highlights Assistant off. Its charge figures are 38 minutes to 80% or 55 to full with the specified 9 V/2 A setup at 25°C, camera off. Ricoh quotes about 300 photos or 60 minutes of video using its own method. These do not establish which camera lasts longer during a bracketed property shoot.
Inspect the storage edition and built-in battery condition of a used Z1. For X4, budget for cards and compatible spare batteries. Neither internal storage nor a second card left beside the camera is an independent off-site backup. Removable X4 lens guards are protection, not the X5's user-replaceable optical design.
Wireless listings come from the X4 product page and Ricoh's archived catalogue. They do not establish a measured offload speed. X4's water-depth rating also does not guarantee correct underwater stitching: its manufacturer recommends the appropriate dive case for underwater 360 capture.
Include processing equipment in the kit
X4 camera originals use the Insta360 app or Studio workflow; Z1 RAW work needs the developer-plus-stitcher route described above. Test camera control and editing separately: connecting a phone does not establish that it can process a long high-resolution video efficiently.
X4's product page lists an A12/iOS 13 baseline, or Android examples including Snapdragon 855, Kirin 990 and Exynos 2200 with Android 10 or HarmonyOS 2. It requires a 64-bit phone system and excludes SDM765 5G decoding. Verify the current software requirements and representative files on the intended device before a paid booking.
Which kit fits your assignments?
Real estate: compare X4's supported bracketed route against a deliberately developed Z1 capture, not a maximum-resolution marketing label against an unrelated room photograph. Include operator time and repeatability in the decision.
Construction: X4's removable power and stated body protection support a different field plan from Z1. Keep capture positions and processing consistent across visits, and make an overlapping reference visit when switching systems. Our construction workflow covers the broader record; neither camera is claimed to provide survey-grade measurement.
Travel: X4 offers more motion-video flexibility, while Z1 remains an option for deliberate still photography. Keep destination spheres for owner-operated Panorra separately from social crops; end-to-end platform compatibility has not been tested here.
