Insta360 X4 vs Ricoh Theta X: Full Specs and Tour Workflows

Technical comparison · Hybrid video capture and still-tour production

These cameras share a 1/2-inch sensor-format label, touchscreens and removable batteries. Their recording modes, storage and HDR processing differ substantially. Choose around the finished panorama or video you need, not just the largest megapixel number.

A similar sensor label does not mean the same camera

Shortlist X4 for a mixed still-and-video kit. Ordinary 8K30 spherical video, high-frame-rate 4K and dedicated single-lens modes make it a different proposition from Theta X's low-frame-rate 8K. These are documented capabilities, not evidence that every X4 room panorama is better.

Shortlist Theta X for a deliberate still-tour workflow. Internal recording storage, location hardware and the choice between ordinary JPEG and a separate HDR-DNG process may matter more than action-video modes. Both cameras let you swap batteries; this is not a removable-versus-fixed-battery comparison.

If you already have a working tour kit, test a representative room through final delivery before replacing it. Adding motion-video capability can be useful without changing the camera used for every property still.

Largest specified panorama width

X4 — 11,904 pixels

Theta X — 11,008 pixels

Zero-baseline file-width chart. X4's listed panorama is approximately 8.14% wider, not 8.14% sharper. This is not a comparison of matched processed images.

Theta X HDR-DNGFour RAW captures processed into HDR-DNGDevelop dual-fisheye JPEG/TIFF, then stitch

The shared AEB guide explicitly excludes X4 AEB at 72 MP. It directs X4 users to 18 MP HDR Photo and PureShot + RAW. A table saying only “72 MP, DNG, HDR” would conceal that important restriction.

Theta X's official HDR-DNG plug-in supplies a RAW-derived option separate from ordinary JPEG capture. Its installation instructions require firmware 2.61.0 or later. Ricoh's workflow guide describes 16-bit output and development to dual-fisheye JPEG or RGB TIFF before THETA Stitcher. Budget for the complete capture-to-delivery process rather than comparing file extensions alone.

Use a room with bright windows, dark textures and objects near the stitching seam. Match the viewpoint and final viewing size, inspect moving curtains and people, and record editing time. Neither a wider master nor a RAW route proves a universal quality winner.

8K is not the same motion capability

Theta X's Multi Bracket supports 2–13 custom sets of shutter, ISO and white-balance parameters. This is not the same operation as its four-frame HDR-DNG plug-in. Do not assume that either camera's maximum panorama size applies to every bracketed or RAW configuration.

X4's ordinary 8K30 is better suited by specification to conventional motion playback than Theta X's 8K10/2. Reframing still uses only part of the recorded sphere, so an 8K spherical master is not an 8K forward-facing crop. Bitrate alone is not an image-quality score across different codecs and processing.

Theta X's video FAQ reports approximately ten minutes at 5.7K30/4K60 at 25°C before heat limitations, potentially less in other conditions. It says 5.7K30 cannot transfer to a smartphone and makes 4K60 transfer device-dependent. Plan a computer/card-reader workflow when needed; a general recording-duration setting is not a thermal guarantee.

Flat clips, stabilization and time sequences

Theta X's selectable bitrates, in Mbps, are 120/96/40 at 8K10; 64/32/16 at 8K2; 120/64/32 at 5.7K30; 80/60/40 at 5.7K10; 16/12/8 at 5.7K2; 120/64/32 at 4K60; 100/54/32 at 4K30; and 32/16/8 at 2K30. Its separate USB streaming modes list 4K30 at 100 Mbps or 2K30 at 32 Mbps, with mono linear PCM audio. Streaming figures must not be confused with recorded MP4 options.

X4 lists single-lens 4K, 2.7K and 1080p up to 60 fps, FreeFrame square capture, and Me Mode at 4K30 or lower resolutions up to 120 fps. Its Active HDR is separate from ordinary video: do not describe ordinary 8K30 as 8K Active HDR. The shared shooting table does not list PureVideo or InstaFrame for X4.

FlowState and 360° Horizon Lock are documented X4 features, not evidence of a matched walking-stabilization win over Theta X. Compare the same route, exposure and delivery crop before making a production decision.

The X4 product page advertises Bullet Time at 5.7K120 or 3K240. These special-mode labels do not extend the ordinary spherical frame-rate table above; exact output dimensions are not established here. Keep a representative original file when validating a slow-motion delivery workflow.

For construction, a timelapse clip and dated, navigable still panoramas serve different purposes. Preserve the inspection record independently of promotional footage. Theta X's sequential-lens Time Shift still capture should not be confused with Insta360's similarly named accelerated-motion workflow.

Storage, batteries and field protection

X4's exact ordinary single-lens dimensions are 3840 × 2160, 2720 × 1536 or 1920 × 1080 at 24, 25, 30, 50 or 60 fps. FreeFrame lists 3840 × 3840 at 24/25/30, with 2720 × 2720 and 1920 × 1920 adding 48/50/60. Me Mode lists 3840 × 2160 at 24/25/30 or 2720 × 1536 and 1920 × 1080 at 50/60/100/120. A frame rate from Me Mode should not be assigned to ordinary single-lens video.

The X4 timelapse guide lists 11K, 8K and 5.7K playback at 30 fps, with intervals of 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 30, 60 or 120 seconds depending on resolution. Its explanation is unclear at the one-second boundary for high resolutions; check the available camera setting. Playback frame rate is not capture frequency, and 11K timelapse is not ordinary 11K video.

Theta X's interval still mode instead offers 6 seconds–60 minutes in one-second steps, 2–200 shots or an unspecified count, and either 11008 × 5504 or 5504 × 2752 output. Select the interval around the event you need to document and the required individual records, not only the desired speed of a promotional clip.

X4's hardware table lists about 75 minutes at 8K30 or 135 at 5.7K30 under its laboratory method. Theta X lists about 250 stills, 30 minutes at 5.7K30 or 55 minutes at 4K30 under Ricoh's method. These are different workloads, not a measured rooms-per-charge comparison.

X4's removable lens guards protect its optics; they are not the user-replaceable lenses of newer models. The manufacturer recommends its dive case for underwater 360 capture despite the body depth rating. Neither environmental protection nor location data establishes suitability for every construction hazard.

Budget for editing and repeatable delivery

X4's hardware manual quotes 38 minutes to 80% or 55 minutes to full charge with its specified 9 V/2 A setup, camera off at 25°C. Treat these as conditional laboratory figures. Theta X's smaller battery capacity does not by itself predict fewer accepted room panoramas; workload and processing choices matter.

Theta X's Time Shift guide gives first-lens settings of 0–10 seconds and second-lens settings of 1–10 seconds in one-second increments. Because the lenses expose sequentially, moving subjects can change between halves. The specification manual also requires Wi-Fi off for 8K10, 5.7K30, 5.7K10 and 4K60 unless using the specified external-power setup with the battery removed.

X4's storage guide excludes UHS-II/UHS-III cards and capacities above 1 TB. A card marketed as faster is not automatically compatible. Test sustained recording and offload with the exact card model before assigning it to a paid job.

Test representative X4 originals in the intended Insta360 app or Studio version. Test Theta X's ordinary JPEG and HDR-DNG routes independently, including RAW development and Stitcher. Remote triggering, file transfer and smooth high-resolution editing are separate compatibility questions.

X4's product page lists A12/iOS 13 or newer, or supported Snapdragon 855, Kirin 990 and Exynos 2200-class devices with Android 10/HarmonyOS 2 or newer. Installation requires a 64-bit system; SDM765 5G devices are excluded for decoding limitations. Check the current app requirements as well as a representative export: these baseline specifications do not guarantee every AI feature or smooth long-form 8K editing.

Keep capture originals, processing masters and hosted exports separate. Internal storage is useful but is not an independent backup. Time a complete pilot job, including offload, development, stitching, inspection and upload, before estimating staff capacity or replacing a working kit.

Real estate, construction and travel choices

Real estate: compare X4's supported 18 MP AEB route with both Theta X JPEG and HDR-DNG, not unrelated maximum-resolution claims. Check difficult windows, seam cleanup and total turnaround against the client's actual viewing requirements.

Construction: Theta X's location hardware and internal storage solve different logistical problems from X4's motion-video range and stated body protection. Maintain viewpoint IDs, dates and processing consistency; our construction-site virtual-tour workflow covers repeat visits. Neither camera is presented as survey-grade equipment.

Travel: X4 offers the broader documented video range, while Theta X can suit deliberate destination panoramas. Preserve immersive masters separately from social crops for owner-operated Panorra; no camera-specific integration test is claimed.
