Insta360 X6 vs Ricoh Theta X: Full Specs and Tour Workflows

Technical comparison · Still tours, motion video and field workflows

Both cameras offer a touchscreen, removable battery, internal storage and a memory-card slot. The larger differences are in photo processing, video frame rates, location hardware and lens maintenance—not simply whether either camera can shoot a panorama.

Choose for the work you deliver

X6 is the stronger specification-based shortlist for a mixed photo/video brief. Ordinary 8K recording up to 50 fps, dedicated flat modes and replaceable lenses address travel footage and repeat field work. That does not prove that every processed interior panorama is better than a Theta X export.

Theta X remains a distinct still-tour option. Evaluate its standard JPEG process separately from its optional HDR-DNG plug-in. Built-in location hardware can help organize field capture, but does not establish survey accuracy, room recognition or automatic alignment between visits.

For an existing Theta X operator, adding X6 for motion work is a different decision from replacing the still workflow. Compare a complete delivered room before moving a production process to another app and file format.

Largest specified panorama width

X6 — 15,520 pixels

Theta X — 11,008 pixels

Zero-baseline file-width chart. X6's listed panorama is about 41% wider; that is not a measured 41% sharpness improvement. Compare final viewer output at equal viewing size.

X6's file-format guide lists JPG export through the app and JPG/DNG through Studio. Its AEB guide limits 120 MP brackets to three or five exposures; seven requires 30 MP. Larger output and more exposures are separate choices, not simultaneous maximum settings.

Theta X's official HDR-DNG plug-in means it should not be dismissed as JPEG-only. Its installation instructions specify firmware 2.61.0 or later. Ricoh's processing guide describes a stable support, AP-mode Wi-Fi and roughly ten seconds of processing—not a complete room-to-upload time. Develop to dual-fisheye JPEG or 8/16-bit RGB TIFF before THETA Stitcher; the named Lightroom Classic 13.5 verification does not guarantee every later version.

Evaluate both cameras in a room with bright windows, textured shadows and a difficult doorway seam. Retain source files, measure editing time and compare accepted delivery files. More pixels or a RAW extension alone cannot establish the faster or cleaner production route.

Both say 8K, but frame rates differ substantially

Theta X's Multi Bracket permits 2–13 manually configured shutter/ISO/white-balance sets. It is separate from the four-frame HDR-DNG plug-in and is not the same control as X6's resolution-dependent AEB. More shots can increase capture time and expose a merge to subject movement.

X6's ordinary 8K50 is a different capability from Theta X's low-frame-rate 8K. A full sphere also spreads its pixels around the viewer: a forward-facing crop is not an 8K flat frame. Include both immersive and reframed delivery in a sample edit before deciding how much recording resolution you need.

Theta X's recording restrictions matter for site walkthroughs: approximately ten minutes at 5.7K30 or 4K60 at 25°C, with potentially shorter thermal limits. The FAQ says 5.7K30 cannot transfer to a smartphone and 4K60 transfer depends on the device. Its manual requires Wi-Fi off in several demanding modes unless using the specified external-power/battery-removed arrangement. A general recording-duration setting is not a guarantee against thermal shutdown.

Flat clips and time sequences do not replace still tours

Theta X's bitrate options, in Mbps, are 120/96/40 at 8K10; 64/32/16 at 8K2; 120/64/32 at 5.7K30; 80/60/40 at 5.7K10; 16/12/8 at 5.7K2; 120/64/32 at 4K60; 100/54/32 at 4K30; and 32/16/8 at 2K30. USB streaming lists 100 Mbps at 4K30 or 32 Mbps at 2K30 with mono linear PCM audio. These are recording options, not image-quality scores.

X6's 360 PureVideo offers 8K/6K/4K at 24/25/30 fps, but its listed 6K dimensions disagree: 5760 × 2880 in the shooting manual versus 6016 × 3008 on the product page. Verify a current sample file for that mode. X6's special-mode ceilings—240 Mbps for high-bitrate 8K TimeShift/timelapse and 360 Mbps for 16K timelapse—must not be substituted for its ordinary-video bitrate.

X6 lists 5K landscape video up to 60 fps, 4K landscape up to 120 fps and square FreeFrame recording. Bullet Time reaches 7680 × 1920 at 100 fps, 6016 × 1504 at 120 and 3840 × 960 at 240; those narrow frames are not complete 2:1 spheres. Timelapse lists 15360 × 7680 or 7680 × 3840 at 25/30 playback fps, distinct from ordinary 16K video.

For construction, an accelerated activity clip can illustrate progress but cannot replace dated inspection panoramas. Theta X's interval still capture and sequential-lens Time Shift address different tasks from X6's moving timelapse. Keep the required evidence record separate from promotional footage.

For exact X6 flat dimensions, the listed landscape frames are 5120 × 3840 or 5120 × 2880 at 5K, 3840 × 2880 or 3840 × 2160 at 4K, and 2688 × 2016 or 2688 × 1520 at 2.7K. FreeFrame uses 6016 × 6016 at 25/30 fps or 3040 × 3840 at 25/30/50/60. The product page lists portrait 4K/2.7K up to 120 fps, while the manual stops at 60; their nominal 9:16 4K entry also repeats 2880 × 3840, which is not 9:16. Confirm actual output before promising a specific portrait deliverable.

InstaFrame 2.0 can pair 4K flat video with 8K spherical backup at 24/25/30 fps. Flat-only frame rates conflict between sources: up to 60 in the manual but 30 on the product page. Neither supports claiming an 8K60 backup. X6's HDR guide applies Active HDR automatically to ordinary 360 Video and InstaFrame, but excludes flat 5K and flat zoom from 1× to 1.2×. Video HDR and still-photo RAW processing are separate functions.

Theta X's interval still controls offer 6 seconds–60 minutes in one-second steps, 2–200 frames or an unspecified count, at either standard panorama size. Its Time Shift shoots the lenses sequentially, allowing the photographer to move out of view. First-lens settings span 0–10 seconds and second-lens settings 1–10 seconds. Inspect moving people and equipment near the seam rather than treating a two-time capture as a single instant.

Internal storage is a useful fallback, not an independent backup. Offload and verify a second copy before clearing either camera. X6's user-replaceable lenses address repairability, while Theta X's location hardware addresses file organization; these are different advantages rather than a single durability score.

X6 quotes 140 minutes at 8K30, 79 at 8K50 and 170 at 6K30 with its standard battery. Theta X quotes about 250 stills, 30 minutes at 5.7K30 or 55 minutes at 4K30 under Ricoh's own method. Different recording formats and test procedures prevent an equivalent rooms-per-charge conclusion.

Test the complete software and delivery chain

USB documentation caveat: X6's technical manual and current product page say USB 3.1, but its Japanese launch release calls it USB 3.0. The table follows the technical specification; neither label measures performance with your cable, storage or workstation. X6 also documents FlowState and 360° Horizon Lock, but no matched walking-stabilization test is claimed here.

X6's hardware manual specifies 24 minutes to 80% or 35 minutes to full charge, with the camera off at 25°C and suitable 30 W PD3.0 PPS power. The product page lists a 1/4-inch thread and magnetic mounting. A spare battery, compatible charger and tested support arrangement are separate parts of the field kit.

X6's published phone baseline includes A14/iOS 16 and Android examples such as Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or Kirin 9000, with Android 10/HarmonyOS 2 and a 64-bit system. The same product page lists Exynos 2200 as compatible and then excludes it for decoding performance; confirm the exact handset with support. SDM765 devices are excluded. App installation alone does not prove smooth decoding or export.

Test X6 originals in the actual Insta360 app/Studio version, and Theta X HDR-DNG through development and Stitcher. Basic remote triggering is a different workload from processing a large RAW sequence or decoding high-resolution H.265. Include workstation storage, export time and staff training in the upgrade cost.

Make one representative pilot job: capture, offload, develop, stitch, inspect and upload. Inspect seams in a rotating viewer, not only a flat preview. A larger master can be useful, but an export that exceeds the destination's practical requirements may add processing and storage without improving the delivered experience.

Real estate, construction and travel

Real estate: compare X6's resolution-dependent AEB with both Theta X JPEG and HDR-DNG. Choose the shortest repeatable process that meets the client's image-quality requirement, rather than assuming every room needs the most complex capture mode.

Construction: compare power swaps, lens protection, location records and consistent viewpoints. Neither camera is presented as a survey instrument or an automatic BIM-alignment system. See our construction-site virtual-tour workflow for repeat-visit organization.

Travel: X6's broader motion range supports mixed immersive and social-video work. Theta X can still suit deliberate destination stills. Preserve full panoramas separately for owner-operated Panorra; no camera-specific integration test is claimed.

Read the individual X6 and Theta X guides, compare X5 vs Theta X or Theta X vs Z1, and browse the comparison directory. Compare current complete-kit quotes rather than assuming a permanent price winner.
