Insta360 X3 vs X4: Specs, 8K Video and Virtual Tour Tradeoffs

Technical comparison · Existing-owner upgrade guide

The X4 raises ordinary 360 video from 5.7K30 to 8K30 and adds faster recording modes. For still tours, both cameras use a 72 MP label and the same nominal sensor format. Separate those two deliverables before deciding what an upgrade is worth.

Who has a practical reason to upgrade?

An X3 owner producing both travel clips and property tours has a more direct reason to investigate X4 than a photographer already satisfied with X3 still panoramas. The X4's documented recording options change what can be captured; they do not prove that every finished room view is better.

Identify the constraint first: reframing a distant subject, producing a slower-motion sequence, processing an interior exposure or maintaining a long capture day. Request original files made with the relevant mode. A successful daytime video demonstration does not answer an interior-photo question.

The still-photo workflow deserves its own test

The X3 product documentation directs PureShot photo editing to desktop. The X4 AEB instructions require 18 MP HDR Photo and PureShot + RAW, and explicitly exclude 72 MP AEB. A newer camera therefore does not automatically combine its highest resolution with every exposure feature.

For an existing X3 owner, finish the same kind of difficult interior using the actual supported route on each camera. Compare window edges, dark furniture, moving curtains and seams at the same displayed size. Keep the capture mode and editing recipe with the job, so differences caused by processing are not attributed only to the hardware.

The X3's maximum listed photo is slightly wider than the X4's, but that small dimensional difference is not a quality ranking. Lens behavior, noise reduction, stitching and delivery compression can matter more than those extra samples. Do not extract a video frame and treat it as the camera's best dedicated still.

Maximum ordinary 360-video frame width

X3 — 5,760 pixels

X4 — 7,680 pixels

Zero-baseline chart. X4's maximum frame is one-third wider. That does not mean one-third better image quality, and it does not describe either camera's still-photo resolution.

More source samples can give a reframing workflow more room to work, but the final crop covers only part of the sphere. Inspect the actual exported view. Recording a higher bitrate also demands storage and processing capacity; it does not prove that every scene retains more useful detail.

Source: Insta360's X4/X3 comparison and the model-specific product pages. Its historical price table is not used here as a current quote. An 8K timelapse feature on the X3 does not give it ordinary 8K video; likewise, Bullet Time frame rates should not be substituted for the main recording modes.

Me Mode documentation caveat: Insta360's X4/X3 comparison lists X3 Me Mode at 1080p60. Its shared shooting table lists Me Mode among X3's modes but marks the separate Me Mode resolution row as unsupported. The headline above follows the model-specific comparison; confirm the available settings on your X3 firmware before planning a shoot around this mode.

For a hotel shoot, preserve separate complete panoramas and promotional clips. A single-lens recording or a reframed social export cannot replace the full sphere requested for an immersive tour.

These figures are not our continuous-recording or thermal tests. The hardware manual describes laboratory conditions, including screen, Wi-Fi and bitrate settings. The X4's 5.7K endurance must not be presented as its 8K endurance. Charging depends on the stated power setup, and neither USB version guarantees a particular end-to-end transfer speed.

The manufacturer's comparison distinguishes X4 removable lens guards from X3 adhesive guards. A guard is not a user-replaceable camera lens. Check model-specific batteries, protection and closely fitted accessories before calculating an upgrade cost. Both protruding lenses still require careful transport and cleaning.

Phone requirements and file delivery

The X3 product page lists an Apple baseline of A11 and iOS 13, with Android examples beginning at Snapdragon 845, Kirin 980 and Exynos 9810. The X4 page raises the listed Apple chip baseline to A12 and the Android examples to Snapdragon 855, Kirin 990 and Exynos 2200. Both warn about SDM765 5G decoding and require a 64-bit phone system.

These published baselines are not a promise that every later app version or AI feature works on every listed device. Before upgrading, process a representative camera file on the exact phone or computer you plan to carry. Being able to control the shutter does not prove that 8K editing will be responsive.

  1. Archive complete camera folders, including companion files.
  2. Process one representative capture before committing to a batch.
  3. Export a full sphere for the tour and a separate crop for social delivery.
  4. Inspect the hosted result on phone and desktop, including seams, floor and ceiling.

How the decision changes with the assignment

Real estate: prioritize the finished interior panorama. Both 72 MP labels are weak evidence for replacing an X3 that already meets the client standard. Investigate the actual HDR/PureShot route and processing effort before buying for still work alone.

Construction: standardize camera height, viewpoint IDs and capture settings across visits. If introducing X4, take reference views with both cameras where practical so a rendering change is not mistaken for a physical change. See the construction-site virtual-tour workflow. Neither camera is presented as a survey instrument or automatic inspection system.

Travel: X4's additional recording modes can matter for moving subjects and reframed destination clips. X3 remains worth testing when you already own it and primarily need panoramas. Preserve full-resolution travel masters for owner-operated Panorra storytelling; this article does not claim a verified camera-to-platform integration.

Read the individual X3 and X4 guides, continue to X4 vs X5, or return to the comparison directory. Use current local kit quotes and realistic resale proceeds; this page does not invent a price advantage or performance score.
