DJI Osmo 360 vs Ricoh Theta X: Specs and Tour Workflows

Both cameras offer internal storage, removable batteries and a touchscreen. Osmo 360 adds a much broader motion-video range and a larger specified JPEG panorama; Theta X provides location hardware and a separate HDR-DNG still-production route. For tour work, the right comparison is the finished room panorama and the time needed to produce it.

Choose the missing capability, not the largest number

Shortlist Osmo 360 for mixed still and motion assignments. Its ordinary 8K video reaches 50 fps, and dedicated flat modes cover conventional clips. A tour operator who also makes property walkthrough promotions or travel videos may benefit from those documented options without changing the camera used for every interior still.

Shortlist Theta X when its still workflow solves a specific production problem. Location hardware, ordinary JPEG capture and the optional HDR-DNG process address different requirements from high-frame-rate video. Both cameras have internal storage and swappable batteries, so those features alone do not establish a Theta X advantage.

If you already own either system, identify what your existing process cannot deliver. Test a representative job before purchasing another camera; neither manufacturer specifications nor a resolution chart can establish the better finished panorama in your room.

Ricoh's official plug-in adds a RAW-derived workflow beyond the ordinary JPEG specification. Installation requires firmware 2.61.0 or later. Its workflow guide describes 16-bit output, development to dual-fisheye JPEG or RGB TIFF, then THETA Stitcher processing. A file-extension comparison that calls Theta X simply “JPEG only” misses this separate route.

The Multi Bracket manual allows shutter, ISO and white-balance settings for each of its 2–13 entries. Do not assume that bracketed capture, ordinary HDR rendering and HDR-DNG produce identical files or require identical operator time.

For a useful comparison, capture the same room from the same viewpoint, retain originals and inspect finished spheres at a common viewing size. Include bright windows, dark textures and objects near a seam. A JPEG workflow can be appropriate for fast delivery; a RAW-derived route can justify extra work when it solves a demonstrated problem. Neither is a universal winner without the final output.

DJI's 8K50 and Theta X's 8K10 are not substitutes for the same motion deliverable. A narrow crop also contains only part of the sphere's pixels. Higher bitrate and a dedicated low-light mode are capabilities, not measured quality or dynamic-range wins.

DJI's product overview documents 10-bit and D-Log M. Check the selected recording mode rather than assuming every special mode has the same color pipeline. Theta X's cited documentation does not establish an equivalent log option. Compare a common delivery grade, not an ungraded log clip against processed footage.

Theta X's selectable recording bitrates, in Mbps, are 120/96/40 at 8K10; 64/32/16 at 8K2; 120/64/32 at 5.7K30; 80/60/40 at 5.7K10; 16/12/8 at 5.7K2; 120/64/32 at 4K60; 100/54/32 at 4K30; and 32/16/8 at 2K30. Separate USB streaming modes list 4K30 at 100 Mbps or 2K30 at 32 Mbps with mono linear PCM audio; these are not recorded MP4 settings.

Theta X's recording FAQ describes roughly ten minutes at 5.7K30/4K60 at 25°C before heat limits, potentially less in other conditions. It excludes 5.7K30 smartphone transfer and makes 4K60 transfer device-dependent. Its specification requires Wi-Fi off for 8K10, 5.7K30, 5.7K10 and 4K60 unless the specified external-power arrangement is used with the battery removed.

Flat video and time sequences are separate deliverables

Osmo 360 lists ordinary single-lens 5K, 4K and 2.7K at 25/30/50/60 fps in 4:3 or 16:9. Boost extends 4K/2.7K to 100/120 fps and adds portrait formats. These are flat-camera options, not additional ordinary full-sphere rates.

Exact ordinary flat dimensions are 5120 × 3840 or 5120 × 2880 at 5K; 3840 × 2880 or 3840 × 2160 at 4K; and 2688 × 2016 or 2688 × 1512 at 2.7K. Boost retains the 4K/2.7K landscape sizes and adds 2160 × 3840 or 1512 × 2688 portrait capture. Single-lens SuperNight uses the landscape 4K/2.7K sizes at 25/30 fps. DJI's separate single-lens livestream output is 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps.

DJI's Selfie mode lists square 3840 × 3840 up to 60 fps, 3000 × 3000 up to 120 and 1920 × 1920 at 100/120/240. Vortex instead lists 6000 × 1500 at 100/120 or 3840 × 960 at 240. A narrow Vortex frame should not be described as a full 2:1 panorama.

DJI timelapse produces 8K25/30 playback, with selectable capture intervals from one second to 60 minutes. Hyperlapse lists Auto or 2/5/10/15/30× speed. Theta X's interval still mode offers six seconds–60 minutes in one-second increments, 2–200 shots or an unspecified count, and 11K or 5.5K photos. Keep dated site panoramas separately from a promotional accelerated clip.

DJI's precise timelapse interval choices are 1/2/3/4/5/6/8/10/15/20/25/30/40 seconds or 1/2/5/30/60 minutes. Duration choices are 5/10/20/30 minutes, 1/2/3/5 hours or unlimited. Pre-REC offers 5/10/15/30 seconds or 1/2/5 minutes. These are different timing controls: an output frame rate, capture interval and pre-recording buffer do not describe the same thing.

Theta X's Time Shift exposes its lenses sequentially so the operator can move out of view. First-lens settings span 0–10 seconds and second-lens settings 1–10 seconds in one-second steps. Moving people or machinery can change between the two exposures; this still function is not a substitute for DJI's accelerated-motion footage.

DJI documents RockSteady 3.0 and HorizonSteady, with panoramic stabilization selected during Mimo export. Single-lens HorizonSteady is restricted to standard-view, distortion-corrected 16:9 video up to 60 fps. These feature names do not establish a matched walking-stabilization result against Theta X.

DJI quotes 100 minutes at 8K30, 120 with Endurance enabled, or 190 at 6K24 Endurance. Its conditions include 25°C, screen off and wireless/control features off; EU/UK operation can differ. Ricoh quotes approximately 250 stills, 30 minutes at 5.7K30 or 55 at 4K30 under its own method. These different workloads do not establish a percentage battery-life advantage for room photography.

Internal storage is useful when a card is unavailable, but it is not an independent backup. Likewise, a water-depth rating is not a guarantee of clean underwater stitching: DJI warns against relying on its bare fisheye-camera body for underwater capture. Protect protruding lenses and validate mounting, cable access and power arrangements before a field assignment.

DJI's FAQ supports PD 3.0 charging with a 30 W-or-higher charger and compatibility with both the 1950 mAh Extreme Battery Plus and 1770 mAh Extreme Battery. A full-charge time is not established here; charger wattage alone cannot supply one. Theta X's quoted endurance uses firmware 1.20.0 and Ricoh's measurement method, not a matched test against Osmo 360.

Osmo 360 supports its quick-release clips and a bottom 1/4-inch screw hole. DJI recommends keeping the camera and invisible stick aligned; tilting or offsetting the mount can interfere with stick removal. Its lenses are not user-changeable according to the FAQ, and optional transparent protectors are not underwater housings. Theta X lists TR-1 remote-release compatibility; check support clearance and access to removable power before a paid capture session.

Budget the complete processing and delivery path

DJI's FAQ supports Mimo or USB transfer from internal and card storage; a card reader accesses the card only. Test representative OSV footage and JPEG panoramas in the software you intend to use. Theta X's ordinary JPEG and HDR-DNG development/stitching routes need separate tests. A successful phone connection is not proof that every file can be transferred or edited smoothly.

At this check, DJI's downloads page lists Mimo 2.12.0 for iOS 15 or Android 9 and newer. Studio 1.2.11 lists macOS 11 on M1 or newer, or Windows 10 and newer, and recommends at least 16 GB RAM. Its Windows recommendations include recent Core/Ryzen processors and discrete graphics. These are software requirements and recommendations, not guarantees of smooth long-form 8K processing on every qualifying machine.

Keep untouched captures, processing masters and hosted exports separate. Inspect the final equirectangular image for seams, orientation, color consistency and loading behavior. Neither a format listing nor a manufacturer sample certifies a camera's complete GoThru or Panorra workflow.

Real estate, construction and travel choices

Real estate: evaluate Theta X's HDR-DNG route if it addresses a demonstrated difficult-room problem; compare its completed output and processing time with DJI's JPEG route. Osmo 360's broader video capabilities become relevant when the assignment includes more than still tours.

Construction: Theta X's location hardware and DJI's motion options solve different recording needs. Both offer internal storage and removable power. Maintain viewpoint IDs, dates and processing consistency; see the construction-site virtual-tour workflow. Neither camera is presented as survey-grade equipment.

Travel: DJI covers more documented action-video tasks, while Theta X can suit deliberate destination panoramas. Preserve full spheres separately from social crops for owner-operated Panorra. Include support equipment, backups and editing time in the purchase decision rather than assuming a permanent price winner.
