PanoX V2 vs Ricoh Theta X: Specs and Virtual-Tour Workflows

Technical head-to-head · Touchscreen cameras for spherical stills

PanoX V2 offers a larger touchscreen and a slightly wider maximum panorama. Theta X is lighter, has removable power and documents a dedicated HDR-DNG workflow. For a virtual-tour business, those handling and processing differences matter more than choosing between the labels 12K and 11K.

Choose the production route before choosing the resolution

Shortlist V2 when a larger camera display and its documented streaming features suit the assignment. Test the complete spherical still workflow before buying specifically for DNG. A file-format entry is not evidence that the software needed to develop and stitch that file is available to your team.

Shortlist Theta X when removable batteries and Ricoh's documented HDR-DNG processing route address a recurring limitation. The plug-in workflow is separate from the camera's standard JPEG mode and still requires development and stitching. It should be evaluated for delivery time as well as image quality.

For either camera, prove the workflow with a representative room before committing to a large property job. The useful outcome is an accepted, correctly stitched panorama on the client's viewing device—not a large file that nobody has finished processing.

Maximum listed panorama width

PanoX V2 — 11,968 pixels

Theta X — 11,008 pixels

Zero-baseline specification chart. V2's listed maximum is approximately 8.7% wider, not 8.7% sharper. RAW and special-mode outputs require their own processing checks.

The important difference is the documented RAW workflow

Ricoh's HDR-DNG plug-in page describes combining four RAW captures inside Theta X and then editing the result in Lightroom Classic before stitching with RICOH THETA Stitcher. It specifies firmware 2.61.0 or later for the installation route and supports release from the camera, a Bluetooth remote or a smartphone Web UI. This is not ordinary in-camera JPEG shooting.

That documented sequence gives a team a concrete route to evaluate. It does not establish that every computer, later software version or unusual exposure situation will work without testing. Preserve the source DNG and the developed master, then inspect the stitched sphere for motion, seams and orientation.

Ricoh's September 2024 workflow guide distinguishes availability from installation: the feature is available from firmware 2.60 and pre-installed from 2.61.0. It describes a 16-bit HDR-DNG, AP-mode Wi-Fi control and processing lasting up to around ten seconds after release, with a tripod recommended. That timing is not a complete-job benchmark.

The same guide names Lightroom Classic 13.5 as its confirmed developer at publication. Export a developed dual-fisheye JPEG or 8/16-bit RGB TIFF before using Stitcher; an arbitrary image format is not interchangeable. If using Lightroom HDR Merge, the guide says to disable Auto Align. Keep originals and save stitched results separately rather than overwriting the only working copy.

V2's current Chinese product page lists DNG, but this comparison has not verified a complete current manufacturer DNG-development and stitching route. Its international download-center URL redirected to a password-protected store page when checked on 22 September 2026. That is an availability observation, not proof of product discontinuation or the absence of every possible processing solution.

If RAW is a purchase requirement, request original files and complete the intended edit-and-stitch process before paying for a kit. Do not substitute an old review's promise of future software for a working download and a successful export today. If fast JPEG delivery meets the contract, compare that route separately rather than requiring RAW for every room.

Both list 8K10, not ordinary 8K30 motion capture

Sources: the manufacturer pages linked above. A 10 fps high-resolution recording is not equivalent to a 30 fps travel clip. Theta X's maximum bitrate does not apply to every resolution/frame-rate setting; V2's missing numeric bitrate here is an unknown, not a zero or an inferiority score.

Theta X's manual requires wireless LAN to be off for 8K10, 5.7K30, 5.7K10 and 4K60. The documented alternative uses the K-AC166 external-power kit with the battery removed. Recording or streaming can stop if internal temperature rises. A remote-operated job needs these restrictions in the plan, not just a resolution badge.

Do not confuse live meetings with finished virtual tours

Published live-output routes are not interchangeable integrations

V2's manufacturer explicitly describes real-time in-camera 4K30 stitching for live streaming. That does not establish every offline DNG-processing capability. Likewise, Theta X's USB live mode is not proof of a directly compatible camera-side streaming application.

For a remote site meeting, test the actual network, audio, receiving software and access permissions. For a still tour, test the exported spherical master and navigation. A successful live preview answers a different question from a successful permanent property record.

Sources: manufacturer specifications above. V2's listed 6 GB RAM is working memory, not 6 GB of recording storage. Neither page establishes a weatherproofing rating for this comparison. Protect the body and lenses rather than extrapolating protection from another camera's design.

V2 lists about 70 minutes of 8K10 recording with the screen on, or 40 minutes at its maximum-resolution Wi-Fi livestream setting. Ricoh quotes approximately 250 stills, 30 minutes of 5.7K30 or 55 minutes of 4K30 under its test method and firmware 1.20.0. These are different workloads, not matched endurance results. A larger mAh number does not prove a longer day of HDR photography.

Removable Theta X batteries permit a planned swap strategy. V2 needs a charging or external-power plan and an assessment of the built-in battery's condition. Include the display, remote connection and actual photo processing in your own runtime trial. A manufacturer video-duration claim is not a promised number of finished rooms.

Property, construction and travel tradeoffs

Property photography: compare V2's finished JPEG against Theta X's ordinary JPEG first, then separately evaluate the HDR-DNG route if the difficult scenes justify extra work. Use bright windows, dark furniture and close seam-crossing objects. Measure time per accepted panorama, not only time until the shutter releases.

Construction-site tours: use dated viewpoint IDs, consistent camera height and a record of inaccessible areas. Separate progress panoramas from live site meetings and close-up defect photographs. Built-in location capabilities do not establish survey accuracy or automatic alignment with a building model. See the construction-site capture workflow.

Travel: V2's larger screen may suit camera-side inspection, while Theta X's lower working weight and battery swaps address different field needs. Test screen usability outdoors and offload before a trip. Owner-operated Panorra provides a related destination-storytelling context; no direct camera integration is claimed.

A sample job is the final acceptance test

Before purchase, verify current software access, support, compatible batteries or external power, card requirements and export behavior. Preserve originals and a separate backup. Inspect the hosted sphere on phone and desktop for image detail, seams, orientation and navigation. GoThru operates this publication; we have not completed a camera-specific upload/export test for this pair.
