Insta360 X3 vs X6: Full Specs and Upgrade Workflow

Three-generation upgrade · Beyond 5.7K and 72 MP

X6 changes both the capture ceiling and the supporting workflow of an X3 kit: 8K video, larger listed still panoramas, internal storage, replaceable lenses and higher phone requirements. The case for upgrading is strongest when one of those changes solves a specific problem in your footage or production process.

What changes for an X3 owner?

For moving footage, X6 raises the ordinary spherical-video ceiling from 5.7K30 to 8K50. That gives a different source format for reframing, though a crop still uses only part of the sphere. For still tours, the question is more involved: X3 already supports dedicated high-resolution photos and DNG. X6's larger photo modes and documented bracketing choices need to be evaluated through a finished room export.

Do not treat X3's 8K timelapse label as ordinary 8K video, or X6's PureVideo as proof of better still photography. Separate the tour panorama, promotional clip and progress timelapse in the brief. An upgrade that helps one output may not justify replacing the whole kit for another.

Sources: the shared hardware table, shooting table, and X3/X6 product specifications. X3's closer listed focus limit does not establish better close-range stitching. Sensor-format labels and ISO ceilings are not measurements of clean detail.

Still tours: compare the export route, not just 72 versus 120 MP

X3's product specification explicitly directs PureShot photo editing to desktop software. Its DNG support means RAW capture is not new to this comparison. X6's format manual distinguishes PureShot's INSP or in-camera-stitched JPG from PureShot + RAW, which adds DNG. It lists JPG export in the app and JPG/DNG in Studio.

These format lists are not complete resolution-by-format matrices. Do not assume every 120 MP X6 or 72 MP X3 option produces the same kind of RAW master. The format guide also says the X series does not export .hdr or .exr: HDR photo processing is not equivalent to a scene-linear lighting file for rendering.

The X6 AEB guide specifies three or five exposures at 120 MP, with seven requiring 30 MP. That guide does not document X3's bracket setup; do not use it as an X3 tutorial or infer that X3 lacks HDR photography. Bracket count and step limits for X3 remain unestablished here.

An X3 owner should compare a supported existing workflow against the intended X6 workflow in two rooms: one with a bright exterior view and one with dark textured surfaces. Match position and final viewing size, inspect seams and color, and record total editing time. A wider master cannot rescue missed exposure information, and a longer bracket can introduce moving-person or foliage artifacts.

Sources: linked shooting table and product specifications. Codec, processing and scene content prevent a bitrate-only quality ranking. Matching stabilization names do not prove matching performance, and log footage needs appropriate grading before comparison with a finished standard-color clip.

Maximum ordinary 360-video width

X3 — 5,760 pixels

X6 — 7,680 pixels

Zero-baseline specification chart. The X6 frame is one-third wider. This is not a claim of one-third better resolved detail, stabilization or low-light quality.

Source discrepancy: X6's 6K PureVideo dimensions are 5760 × 2880 in the manual but 6016 × 3008 on the product page. Confirm actual firmware output for that special mode. Both sources agree on the ordinary 8K dimensions above.

The HDR guide gives X3 a separate Active HDR mode. X6 applies HDR automatically in ordinary 360 Video and InstaFrame under the guide's stated rules; flat 5K and flat zoom from 1× to 1.2× are excluded. These video settings are separate from still-photo AEB.

Sources: shooting/product tables, the manufacturer's X4/X3 comparison for X3 Me Mode, and the timelapse manual. X6 flat 4K uses 3840 × 2880 or 3840 × 2160; 2.7K uses 2688 × 2016 or 2688 × 1520, plus transposed portrait variants. Narrow Bullet Time output is not a complete 2:1 sphere.

X3's shared manual lists Me Mode in its mode inventory but marks the dedicated resolution row unsupported; its product page advertises the feature. Confirm the camera menu if that workflow matters. X6 also has conflicting tables: portrait 4K/2.7K reaches 120 fps on its product page but 60 in the manual, while flat-only InstaFrame reaches 60 in the manual but 30 on the product page. Neither is evidence of an 8K60 backup mode.

X3's timelapse interval list is 0.2/0.5/1/2/4/10/30/60/120 seconds; X6 lists Off and 0.5/1/2/5/10/15/30/60/120. Availability depends on resolution. X6's 16K mode requires Studio for preview, editing and export. For construction, a timelapse compresses activity into a clip; separately captured, dated panoramas serve a different inspection task.

Sources: shared hardware table and product pages. X3's runtime uses High bitrate, screen off and Wi-Fi Auto; X6 uses Standard bitrate/color, screen off and Wi-Fi on, at 25°C. The cameras are also recording different resolutions in the headline comparison. Do not convert those durations into a controlled percentage advantage.

X6 fast-charge claims require a suitable 30 W PD 3.0 PPS supply at 25°C with the camera off. Its largest battery and longest runtime are not promises for every mode or the optional Lite battery. X3's lower listed weight may still matter to a kit you carry all day.

The X3 product page specifically excludes wired iOS connection while supporting wireless iOS/Android and wired Android. X6's USB generation alone does not certify a particular iPhone cable workflow. Test capture, transfer and export on your exact equipment; a connector shape or protocol number is not a transfer-speed measurement.

Repair, audio and phone compatibility

X3 lists Sticky Lens Guards; X6 documents Replaceable Lenses 2.0. Guards protect optics but do not provide the same repair feature. Price model-specific lens parts, protection and batteries rather than assuming interchangeability across three generations. Both have a 1/4-inch mounting point, but body-fitting accessories still need explicit compatibility checks.

X3's audio choices include wind reduction, stereo and direction focus; X6 adds documented voice enhancement and 360 audio options, with an engine-enhancement setting. We have not measured intelligibility or wind performance. A walkthrough microphone trial should include the actual machinery, traffic or wind present at the location.

For editing phones, X3's product page lists A11/iOS 13, Snapdragon 845 and Kirin 980 baselines. X6 lists A14/iOS 16, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Kirin 9000, with Android 10/HarmonyOS 2. Both require a 64-bit system and warn against SDM765 devices. X6's Exynos 2200 listing conflicts with its decoding exclusion; seek confirmation for the exact handset.

X3's Snap Wizard has stricter Android requirements than basic camera support, illustrating why successful shutter control is not proof of full editing support. Likewise, do not assume a phone that handles X3 clips can smoothly export X6's largest files. Test representative originals and keep a separate verified archive before clearing either camera.

Water ratings require the manufacturer's sealing and handling conditions and do not establish seamless bare-camera underwater stitching. Both product pages direct underwater 360 work toward their respective dive cases. Neither camera is established here as suitable for every construction hazard.

Where the upgrade can earn its place

Interior tours: evaluate X6's larger stills and bracket options against your supported X3 output. Judge the entire room, including bright windows, dark furniture, seam cleanup and editing time. A reliable X3 workflow is not obsolete merely because the X6 master is wider.

Construction: X6's internal storage and repair options may reduce particular operational risks, but neither replaces off-site backups or repeatable viewpoint IDs and camera heights. Capture an overlapping visit before changing systems so processing differences are not mistaken for site changes. See the construction-site virtual-tour workflow; no survey-grade accuracy is claimed.

Travel: X6 expands recording and fast flat-video delivery options, while X3 is the lighter listed body and retains an advertised Me Mode workflow. Preserve full destination panoramas for owner-operated Panorra separately from social clips. Include editing-device and accessory costs alongside the body quote; we do not claim a permanent price winner.
