Camera analysis · Real estate and business virtual tours

The X6 deserves a place on the shortlist for property photographers who also create travel content. Its higher-resolution panoramas are attractive, but the business case depends on exposure consistency, stitching and a dependable export workflow—not the headline pixel count alone.

## Our assessment for property photographers

For a new kit, evaluate the X6 with a difficult interior before committing to it for paid virtual tours. For an existing X5 owner, the useful question is whether it improves the finished tour enough to cover the cost of changing equipment. Larger originals can help a detail-oriented assignment, but they do not compensate for clipped windows, inconsistent wall colors or a distracting seam through a doorway.

Our recommendation is conditional: shortlist it for combined still-tour and travel work, then compare complete exported panoramas from the same room. Do not retire a reliable camera solely because the replacement produces a larger file. A repeatable workflow is an asset to a photography business.

## Specifications relevant to a tour kit

The product page's “1-inch” imaging claim is qualified by a footnote about imaging area in 360 capture; its sensor specification is 1/1.1-inch. We use the latter rather than silently treating those descriptions as interchangeable.

## X6 versus X5: panorama width, not measured sharpness

### Higher-resolution 360 still mode: horizontal pixel count

Insta360 X6 — **15,520 pixels**

Insta360 X5 — **11,904 pixels**

Zero-based specification chart using the manufacturer shooting table. The X6 file is approximately 1.30× as wide. This is not a benchmark of resolved detail, dynamic range or viewer performance.

These dimensions describe the whole sphere, not one conventional camera view. A visitor sees only a portion at a time. Compare the same viewing direction and zoom when judging fine text or furnishings, and use the same delivery settings when comparing cameras. Otherwise, differences introduced by resizing or hosting can be mistaken for capture quality.

## What an independent early review found

An independent [15 August 2026 review](https://www.benclaremont.com/blog/insta360-x6-reveiw-is-it-worth-the-upgrade?ref=gothru.co) reports sharper still photos from the X6 than the X5 and original Osmo 360\. However, the X5 retained more dynamic range in one comparison; the X6 lost some bright detail and showed inaccurate color there. The reviewer explicitly identifies early firmware as a limitation. A possible future improvement is not evidence that the issue is already fixed.

He also flags accessory replacement costs: X5 batteries and several body-fitting accessories do not transfer to the redesigned camera. His review includes a purchase incentive link. These are attributed observations, not our own controlled interior tests, and his comparison does not establish a result against the Osmo 360 II.

For real estate, the highlight caveat matters. A view through a window is part of the property description, while blown highlights may hide it. The sensible acceptance test is a full room panorama containing both the bright exterior and the darker interior—not a cropped detail sample alone.

## Choose a still-photo workflow before the assignment

The manufacturer shooting table lists HDR and AEB support within 360 Photo. It does not, by itself, establish every combination of resolution, file format and exposure bracketing. Do not assume that a setting available in one mode is available in another.

The separate [official AEB instructions](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x6/en-us/operating-tutorials/capture-preview/parameters/aeb?ref=gothru.co) establish a concrete restriction: at 120 MP the X6 supports three or five consecutive bracketed shots, not seven. Seven-shot capture requires switching to 30 MP. In 360 Photo, open the shooting settings, choose AEB under HDR Photo, then set the shot count and exposure step. The page does not specify every available step value in its text.

This creates a genuine production choice between the larger output and a longer bracket sequence. More exposures do not automatically guarantee a better room panorama: people, foliage outside a window and other movement can complicate merging. Compare the finished results before choosing a default. The [manufacturer HDR reference](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x6/en-us/operating-tutorials/capture-preview/shooting-mode/hdr?ref=gothru.co) documents HDR Photo separately from Active HDR video; the video feature is not a substitute for selecting a still-photo workflow.

An independent [27 August shooting-mode guide](https://www.benclaremont.com/blog/insta360x6-every-shooting-mode-explained?ref=gothru.co) favors 120 MP photos and generally leaves HDR Photo off. It describes a timer up to 15 seconds and distinguishes PureShot from PureShot + RAW. That is a starting point from one creator, not a universal prescription for interiors. In particular, do not automatically transfer an X5 tutorial's HDR recommendation to the X6.

Our proposed test is to capture a static, window-lit room using the processed route, then repeat with the alternative HDR or bracketing settings available on the installed firmware. Record the settings and software versions. Judge the finished sphere for window recovery, shadow noise, halos and color. If the alternative requires extra processing, record that time alongside the visual benefit.

## INSP, DNG and the final tour image

__X6 360-photo file routes documented by Insta360__
| Capture option | Saved files | Documented export |
| -------------- | --------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------- |
| PureShot | INSP; JPG when in-camera stitching is enabled | JPG |
| PureShot + RAW | The processed file above plus DNG | App: JPG. Studio: JPG or DNG. |

Source: [manufacturer file-format reference, X6 360 rows](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x6/en-us/operating-tutorials/storage/fileformat?ref=gothru.co). Its flat-photo rows are separate. The same reference says X-series cameras do not export .hdr or .exr files; HDR photography is not a promise of those CGI lighting formats. The table does not verify a complete mode-by-mode export-resolution matrix.

Our delivery procedure is to copy and preserve originals, process a full-sphere master, then create the hosting copy. Confirm that the export remains a 2:1 equirectangular panorama rather than a reframed flat photograph. Inspect the top, bottom and both lens boundaries in the viewer. Check the actual exported dimensions instead of assuming that a capture specification guarantees the same dimensions in every software route.

For a team, include the room identifier, capture date and processing settings with the archive. Keep originals separate from retouched masters and smaller sharing copies. This makes a later correction possible without confusing a compressed web image with the best available source.

## A practical acceptance test for business tours

__Proposed production checks—not measured X6 results__
| Scene | Look for | Operational decision |
| ---------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Bright window in a darker room | Exterior detail, shadow noise and halos | Choose the capture and processing route before quoting the full job |
| Doorway or shelving near a lens boundary | Broken lines or mismatched objects | Move the tripod and repeat before leaving |
| Adjacent rooms with different lighting | Wall-color and exposure consistency | Budget correction time and establish a repeatable color approach |
| Showroom with moving visitors | Ghosted people or interrupted coverage | Arrange a quieter capture window or repeat the affected viewpoint |
| Finished tour on a phone | Navigation, loading and readable context | Approve the delivery copy independently from the archival master |

A hotel tour and a facilities record have different priorities. Agree with the client on the rooms, viewpoints and intended audience before choosing processing settings. We have not performed an X6 upload certification for [GoThru](https://gothru.co/?ref=gothru.co), which operates this publication; verify a complete sample privately before promising a particular integration.

## Construction-site documentation

Insta360 advertises IP68 protection and waterproofing to 20 m, plus replaceable lenses. Those are manufacturer claims under its usage conditions, not our durability tests or hazardous-location approval. Protect the lenses during transport and follow the sealing and maintenance instructions. A replaceable part does not prevent a damaged lens from compromising that day's record.

For repeat visits, assign stable viewpoint IDs and record camera height and direction. Capture the same useful coverage where access remains safe; document any moved position. Inspect scaffolding, railings and nearby structures for stitching errors. Keep sensitive project details in access-controlled delivery rather than using a public upload as a compatibility experiment.

See our [construction-site virtual-tour workflow](https://gothru.co/360-cameras/construction-site-virtual-tours/) for the viewpoint register and archive structure. These photographs support visual progress review; they do not establish survey accuracy, automatic BIM alignment or defect detection.

## Travel photography and field logistics

The built-in storage is useful contingency capacity, but it should not become the only copy of a trip or client assignment. Before changing locations, confirm that files have transferred and can be opened. Plan a second copy and protect the lenses when the camera goes into a bag.

For a destination story on [Panorra](https://panorra.com/?ref=gothru.co), another owner-operated site, think in connected viewpoints: arrival, orientation and the important interior or landscape context. Avoid redundant scenes that add download weight without helping the viewer understand the place. We have not tested an X6-specific Panorra export or upload workflow.

A travel video is a separate deliverable from a navigable still tour. Price and plan both explicitly if a hospitality client requests them. Do not use a video feature or runtime claim as evidence for the number of property panoramas you can complete on a battery.

## Upgrade cost and alternatives

Compare total production cost: camera, compatible batteries and protection, support, storage, processing time, travel and hosting. Measure the time needed to finish a representative room rather than inventing a per-property speed estimate. Include the cost of maintaining a backup capture option.

Our [X5 guide](https://gothru.co/360-cameras/insta360-x5/) provides the older camera's photo workflow for an upgrade comparison. Also examine the [Osmo 360 II](https://gothru.co/360-cameras/dji-osmo-360-ii/) and [QooCam 3 Ultra](https://gothru.co/360-cameras/kandao-qoocam-3-ultra/) guides when assembling a shortlist. These are workflow alternatives, not a ranking based on a common test scene.

The X6's promising combination is a larger still panorama and a mixed-use capture system. The unresolved purchase question is whether that combination improves your delivered tours enough to justify the equipment and processing change. Confirm it with the actual scene, software and viewer you will use for paid work.
