Owner reports · Checked September 22, 2026

The recurring complaints reviewed here concern Android app crashes, GPS Preview Remote compatibility, AI Director’s I-Log restriction and the Dive Case Pro lens-changing workflow. They are not four proven camera defects: software symptoms, accessory compatibility and design limitations need different explanations.

**Research disclosure:** Public Reddit reports are not our own hands-on testing or a failure-rate survey. Each included complaint requires multiple independent owners. Reposts count once. “Common issues” in the headline does not mean these problems affect most cameras. Firmware, app versions and outcomes are unknown where owners do not supply them.

This review covers the X6, which the [manufacturer’s hardware table](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x6/en-us/specs/hardware?ref=gothru.co) dates to August 12, 2026\. Older X-series complaints are not automatically attributed to this model.

## Android app crashes during preview or editing/export

One X6 owner using a Samsung S23+ describes black-screen photo previews, disconnections, error 14040 and app crashes. Their follow-up says the suggested troubleshooting steps did not help, and the phone still became hot and the app crashed even without the camera connected. This is a phone/app report, not evidence of the X6 itself overheating. Source: [X6 Android preview discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/Insta360/comments/1vtk623/x6%5Fapp%5Fbehavior/?ref=gothru.co).

A separate X6 owner selected 60 clips from an hour-long bike recording and reports repeated crashes when proceeding to editing and export. They say it happens over both Wi-Fi and USB, followed by reconnecting and repeating the process. The phone model and software versions are not provided, and no final fix is reported. The shared complaint is app instability while handling X6 media. These accounts do not establish one shared bug, a defective camera, or failure on every Android phone. Support requests for logs and generic troubleshooting suggestions are not confirmed resolutions.

## GPS Preview Remote compatibility and incorrect status displays

Two independent X6 owners describe GPS Preview Remote controls that do not behave correctly: the remote shows an empty camera battery despite a charged camera, and remote power control fails. The original poster also describes a recording timer that does not match the camera’s recording state. A separate owner reports the same battery-display and power-off problems with both generations of GPS Preview Remote, then returned the newer remote. Sources: [X6 remote discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/Insta360/comments/1vorf9p/the%5Fnew%5Fx6%5Fdoesnt%5Fwork%5Fwith%5Fthe%5Fgps%5Fpreview%5Fremote/?ref=gothru.co) and [independent owner’s matching report](https://www.reddit.com/r/Insta360/comments/1vorf9p/comment/p4ap4ur/?ref=gothru.co).

This is an accessory-compatibility complaint, not evidence that the camera battery is actually empty. The [official Chinese-language X-series Bluetooth table](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/onex2/zh-cn/specs/bluetooth?ref=gothru.co), checked September 22, 2026, includes an X6 column and marks both GPS Preview Remote generations as unsupported. It lists other remotes separately, so this does not mean every remote is incompatible. The original poster reports that their Mini Remote works.

A support reply says compatibility is planned for a future version, but that is not a confirmed fix. The owners’ firmware versions are unknown. Before relying on remote operation for a camera mounted out of reach, check compatibility for the exact remote model and test recording, battery status and power controls together. Do not assume an accessory that worked with an X5 has identical X6 support.

## AI Director does not support an I-Log shooting workflow

One X6 owner recorded 45 clips and expected automatic editing while charging, but instead received a prompt to shoot more. Their follow-up confirms they had recorded everything in Log. A second owner, who explicitly upgraded from X5 to X6 for I-Log and says they shoot exclusively in that format, objects to the same restriction. The second account corroborates dissatisfaction with the limitation, not a separate reproduction of the first owner’s error message. Sources: [owner report and Log follow-up](https://www.reddit.com/r/Insta360/comments/1vu55pl/x6%5Fauto%5Fedit%5Fdissapointment/?ref=gothru.co) and [another X6 owner’s I-Log workflow complaint](https://www.reddit.com/r/Insta360/comments/1vu55pl/comment/p570gt0/?ref=gothru.co).

This is a documented feature limitation rather than proof of a defective unit. The [official AI Director manual](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x6/en-us/operating-tutorials/highlight-features/ai-director?ref=gothru.co), checked September 22, 2026, excludes I-Log footage and photos. It also specifies supported shooting modes and recommends clips longer than a minute. Analysis while charging is not the entire export process: the app is still used to view and export the result.

For a workflow built around Log footage and short review or travel B-roll, do not assume AI Director will automatically assemble everything you record. Check its current input requirements before a shoot, and retain the original footage for manual editing. Neither owner provides a confirmed firmware fix or a successful later retest.

## Dive Case Pro lens changes complicate mixed land-and-water shooting

Owners also complain about the lens-changing workflow for the Dive Case Pro. One diver describes the swap as easy but impractical when quickly alternating between above-water and underwater footage. A separate X6 owner requested a return after discovering that their case setup would not record with the standard lenses installed; they still liked the camera for above-water use. Sources: [diver’s experience](https://www.reddit.com/r/Insta360/comments/1vq19ur/x6%5Fis%5Fawesome/?ref=gothru.co) and [lens-requirement and return-request report](https://www.reddit.com/r/Insta360/comments/1vmi8kp/comment/p4hn8o3/?ref=gothru.co).

The [manufacturer’s X6 dive-case guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/Insta360/comments/1w0n9bm/insta360%5Fx6%5Finvisible%5Fdive%5Fcase%5Fpro%5Fguide/?ref=gothru.co) specifies fitting the underwater lenses before using the case, then reinstalling the standard lenses and performing stitching calibration before subsequent use without the case. This is a setup limitation, not evidence that the case or camera is defective. It matters especially when planning a travel sequence that moves between a boat, beach and underwater scenes.

The same diver’s overall experience was positive: they report recording for more than an hour in approximately 12°C water with the case and underwater lenses, without overheating or fogging. They liked the footage and generally the stitching, while noting occasional seams. That does not establish performance in warmer conditions, but it is important context alongside their workflow complaint.

## What the reports do—and do not—establish

We reviewed reports across image quality and stitching, heat and power, storage, water use, mobile editing, accessories and service. Isolated reports and replies without adequate model confirmation do not become recurring complaints simply because they appear in an X6 discussion. Several prominent focus posts are from the same owner; multiple posts or replacement units from that person still count as one source.

Positive accounts also matter. In an [X6 heat and storage discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/Insta360/comments/1vw2n5n/any%5Foverheating%5For%5Fsdcard%5Fissues%5Fon%5Finsta360%5Fx6/?ref=gothru.co), the original question actually describes an X5 problem. Confirmed X6 owners report successful motorcycle and bicycle recordings; one describes 30–45 minutes of 8K/50 recording while riding without heat-related interruption. Those moving-camera conditions cannot establish stationary recording performance, but the X5 complaint is not evidence of X6 overheating.

For your own fault report, retain the original files, note camera firmware and app versions, and record the exact shooting mode, storage destination, phone or computer, accessory model and steps that reproduce the symptom. Back up important footage before any reset, formatting or app reinstallation. A support suggestion is not a verified cure, and a promise of future compatibility is not a delivered update.
