Two-generation upgrade · Interiors, construction and travel

Moving from X4 to X6 changes more than the maximum photo size. The newer camera documents higher-resolution bracketing, 8K50 video, internal storage, replaceable lenses and different phone requirements. An X4 owner should weigh those capabilities against the finished work and the cost of changing a proven kit.

**Research disclosure:** Manufacturer-documentation comparison checked 22 September 2026\. We have not measured these cameras side by side or certified their complete GoThru/Panorra workflows. Specifications, laboratory claims and our practical interpretation are kept separate. This is X4, not X4 Air.

## Should you move directly from X4 to X6?

**Shortlist X6 when a specific new capability matters:** a higher-resolution bracketed still, ordinary 8K above 30 fps, a simultaneous flat/360 recording workflow or an internal-storage fallback. Those are identifiable changes, unlike a general promise that newer always means better.

**Keep a working X4 in consideration** if it already delivers acceptable room panoramas and travel footage. Both offer RAW-related still workflows and 8K recording. Upgrading should solve a visible or operational problem, not merely replace a familiar model with a higher number. Include phone, accessory and processing costs in the decision.

### Maximum listed spherical-photo width

X4 — **11,904 pixels**

X6 — **15,520 pixels**

Zero-baseline specification chart. X6's listed panorama is about 30.4% wider; that is not a measurement of sharper detail or better image quality.

## AEB, HDR and RAW: the important interior difference

The [manufacturer AEB instructions](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x6/en-us/operating-tutorials/capture-preview/parameters/aeb?ref=gothru.co) require X4's 360 HDR Photo mode at 18 MP, with PureShot + RAW selected. The same page explicitly excludes AEB at 72 MP. X6 instead supports three or five bracketed exposures at 120 MP; seven exposures require 30 MP.

This changes the resolution-versus-bracket-length choice. It does not prove that five high-resolution exposures beat a supported X4 workflow in every room. People, moving curtains and trees beyond a window can complicate merging. Compare the complete delivered panorama, including halos and neutral wall color, rather than choosing the longest bracket sequence automatically.

Insta360's [file-format reference](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x6/en-us/operating-tutorials/storage/fileformat?ref=gothru.co) distinguishes saved camera files from exports. X6 PureShot saves INSP, or JPG when in-camera stitching is enabled; PureShot + RAW adds DNG. The app lists JPG export, while Studio lists JPG/DNG. X4's RAW availability is also documented in the AEB workflow, even though the general format table is not a complete mode matrix. Neither camera should be labelled as supporting every resolution in RAW without further evidence.

The format reference says the X series does not export .hdr or .exr. An HDR photograph therefore is not automatically a lighting-environment file for 3D rendering. Archive camera originals separately from web-sized client copies.

For a meaningful upgrade trial, use a fixed position in one bright-window room and one darker room. Keep framing and final viewing size consistent, record all settings and include near doorframes crossing a seam. Measure the time to produce an acceptable hosted image as well as the image itself. This article supplies the test criteria, not invented results.

Sources: the linked shooting and product specifications. The X6's lower ordinary bitrate ceiling is not proof of inferior compression quality, just as its higher 8K frame-rate ceiling is not proof of cleaner low-light footage. Color depth concerns the video workflow; it is not a quality score for JPEG stills.

**PureVideo discrepancy:** X6's manual lists 5760 × 2880 for its 6K setting, while the product page lists 6016 × 3008\. Confirm the output from the intended firmware before promising that exact size. This does not change the ordinary 6K dimensions above.

The [HDR mode guide](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x6/en-us/operating-tutorials/capture-preview/shooting-mode/hdr?ref=gothru.co) gives X4 a separate Active HDR mode. X6 applies it automatically in ordinary 360 Video and InstaFrame without parameter restrictions in that guide, but excludes 5K flat video and flat zoom from 1× to 1.2×. Do not transfer ordinary-video limits to every special mode, or confuse HDR video with still-photo bracketing.

Sources: shared shooting table, product pages and [timelapse manual](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x4/en-us/operating%5Ftutorials/capture-preview/shooting-mode/timelapse?ref=gothru.co). X6's ordinary flat 4K sizes are 3840 × 2880 or 3840 × 2160; 2.7K uses 2688 × 2016 or 2688 × 1520, with transposed portrait variants. Narrow Bullet Time outputs are not complete 2:1 spheres.

**More X6 documentation conflicts:** its product page lists portrait 4K/2.7K up to 120 fps where the manual lists 60\. Conversely, the manual lists flat-only InstaFrame up to 60 where the product page lists 30\. Neither establishes 8K60 simultaneous backup. Confirm the selected mode, backup option and exported file on the actual camera.

The timelapse guide lists X4 intervals of 0.5/1/2/5/10/30/60/120 seconds; X6 adds 15 seconds and an Off option. Available intervals depend on resolution. X4's high-resolution FAQ is unclear around the one-second boundary, so check the menu rather than assuming every combination works. X6's 16K timelapse requires Studio for preview, editing and export. A construction timelapse does not replace a separately navigable record of each site visit.

Sources: hardware table and respective product pages. X4's hardware table expands its Wi-Fi protocol listing beyond the product page; the row above identifies which source it follows. Do not infer a particular connection speed from the protocol label.

**Runtime methods are not matched:** X4 uses High bitrate with screen off, Wi-Fi Auto and AI Highlights Assistant off; X6 uses Standard bitrate/color, screen off and Wi-Fi on, both at 25°C. The figures do not establish a field-tested percentage improvement. They also show why an 8K30 runtime should not be carried over to X6's 8K50 mode.

Charging claims use a suitable 30 W PD 3.0 PPS supply at 25°C with the camera off, with model-specific current/voltage conditions. Neither figure applies to every USB source. Internal storage can rescue a missing-card situation, but files held inside the same camera are not an independent backup.

## Lens protection, audio and the replacement kit

X4's product page describes removable lens guards; X6 documents Replaceable Lenses 2.0\. Protective guards and replaceable camera lenses are different things. Verify model-specific replacement parts, battery packs, guards and close-fitting mounts before budgeting an upgrade. A shared 1/4-inch mounting thread does not make every accessory interchangeable.

Both list FlowState and Horizon Lock, but we have not compared stabilization or microphone performance. X4 lists automatic/active wind reduction, stereo and direction focus; X6 lists wind reduction, intelligent voice enhancement, stereo and 360 audio, with an engine-enhancement setting. For an on-site presenter, assess speech intelligibility in the actual environment rather than choosing from feature names.

Water depth is not an underwater stitching guarantee. X4's product guidance calls for its Invisible Dive Case for underwater 360 footage regardless of depth. Follow the corresponding X6 housing instructions as well. For site work, secure mounting and keeping exposed lenses away from impacts matter independently of the water rating.

## Your X4 phone may not be an X6 editing workstation

The product pages list a higher X6 baseline: A14/iOS 16 versus X4's A12/iOS 13; Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 versus Snapdragon 855; and Kirin 9000 versus Kirin 990\. Both list Android 10/HarmonyOS 2 and a 64-bit phone system. These are dated camera-product requirements, not guarantees about future app versions or every AI feature.

X6's page both includes and excludes Exynos 2200, so that handset compatibility remains unresolved. Both warn against SDM765-based phones. Check the exact device with the manufacturer and process a representative file before relying on it away from your desktop. Being able to trigger a photograph is not the same as being able to complete an export.

Keep originals, export a full sphere for the tour and a separate flat asset for social delivery, and inspect each in its destination viewer. Larger captures may change transfer, processing and storage needs; we have no measured time saving to assign to either camera. The useful benchmark is a completed job on the hardware you actually own.

## The practical decision for each assignment

**Property interiors:** investigate X6's high-resolution AEB if X4's 18 MP bracketed route is the limiting part of your deliverable. Compare bright-window recovery, shadow texture and seam cleanup after export. If the existing X4 workflow already satisfies the client, higher capture dimensions alone do not establish a business case.

**Construction:** internal storage and different repair options can matter operationally, but repeatable position, dates and exposure policy remain essential. Record an overlapping reference visit when switching models. See our [construction-site virtual-tour guide](https://gothru.co/360-cameras/construction-site-virtual-tours/); neither camera is presented as a survey instrument.

**Travel:** X6 adds documented PureVideo and simultaneous flat/360 options, while X4 retains a Me Mode workflow absent from the X6 table. Rehearse the modes you use instead of assuming a one-for-one replacement. Preserve destination panoramas for owner-operated [Panorra](https://panorra.com/?ref=gothru.co) separately from cropped clips; no end-to-end upload certification is claimed.
