Technical comparison · Two-generation upgrade

The X5 adds 8K video, a larger sensor format and user-replaceable lenses to a kit that an X3 owner already knows. It does not add a higher megapixel label for still panoramas. Decide separately whether you need a better video tool, a different interior-photo workflow or a more serviceable travel camera.

**Research disclosure:** This article compares manufacturer documentation, not our own matched camera tests. Specification differences do not establish a measured image-quality winner. Research checked 22 September 2026.

## The short answer for an existing X3 owner

Investigate the X5 if the X3's 5.7K video ceiling, processing options or lens-repair arrangements are limiting paid work. Keep the X3 in consideration if its finished still tours already meet the brief and your main reason for changing is the newer model number. Both are described as 72 MP cameras; neither that shared label nor the X5's larger sensor tells you the improvement in a particular room.

A two-generation upgrade also changes supporting equipment. Price compatible batteries, lens protection, charging and editing hardware before comparing body-only offers. We do not quote an unverified sale price or assign a synthetic performance score.

Minimum focus is not a safe stitching distance: a nearby railing can still cause seam problems even when it is in focus.

## For interiors, compare the processing route rather than the label

The X3 documentation directs PureShot processing to desktop Studio. The [X5 AEB instructions](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x4air/en-us/operating-tutorials/capture-preview/shooting-parameters/aeb?ref=gothru.co) place bracketing inside the HDR Photo selector in 360 Photo mode. They do not document X3's procedure, so they should not be used as an X3 setup guide.

Build a small acceptance test before replacing a functioning X3: one room with a bright window, one dim space and one view with objects near a seam. Process each camera using its supported still-photo workflow. Compare at the same delivered resolution and record capture time, editing effort, window detail and moving-object artifacts. PureVideo is a video feature; its presence does not demonstrate the quality of the dedicated photo export.

The X3 actually lists a slightly wider maximum panorama than the X5\. This does not make it the sharper camera. The difference between 11968 and 11904 pixels is small; sensor response, optics, stitching and processing are separate questions. We have not measured those differences in a common scene.

### Maximum ordinary 360-video frame width

X3 — **5,760 pixels**

X5 — **7,680 pixels**

Zero-baseline specification chart. X5's maximum frame is one-third wider; this is not a measured sharpness or low-light advantage.

The additional video sampling is relevant when a travel clip needs reframing, but the final crop uses only part of the sphere. Check the exported subject, not just the source file label. Higher frame rates also require suitable shutter and lighting choices; they are not a free improvement for dim interiors.

**Documentation caveat:** X5's product page lists 3840 × 2160 for 4K PureVideo in its 360 section, whereas the shared manual lists 3840 × 1920\. We retain the mode label rather than assert that the conflicting dimensions agree. Verify the recording and export needed for your assignment.

The [manufacturer's X4/X3 comparison](https://www.insta360.com/blog/tips/insta360-x4-vs-x3.html?ref=gothru.co) lists X3 Me Mode at 1080p60\. The current shared manual lists Me Mode for X3 but marks its dedicated resolution row unsupported. Confirm your firmware's menu before relying on that mode. X3's 8K timelapse does not turn it into an ordinary 8K video camera.

The [X5 InstaFrame guide](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x5/en-us/operating%5Ftutorials/capture-preview/shooting-mode/instaframe?ref=gothru.co) resolves the output restriction: enabling 360 Video Backup produces 1080p flat video alongside 5.7K+ 360 footage. Disabling backup permits up to 4K flat video but saves no sphere. InstaFrame 2.0 requires firmware 1.7.43 or later and app 2.14.0 or later. For hotel work, a social clip and a navigable panorama are separate deliverables, not interchangeable files.

For HDR video, the [current mode guide](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x6/en-us/operating-tutorials/capture-preview/shooting-mode/hdr?ref=gothru.co) uses a separate Active HDR mode on X3\. X5 enables Active HDR inside ordinary Video settings, limited to 5.7K60 or lower. Its ordinary 8K30 specification is therefore not an 8K Active HDR specification.

The [timelapse manual](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x4/en-us/operating%5Ftutorials/capture-preview/shooting-mode/timelapse?ref=gothru.co) supplies the interval lists above but warns that available intervals depend on resolution. They are not a promise that every interval works at the maximum output size. Playback at 30 fps does not mean capturing 30 exposures per second.

Both also support TimeShift, Bullet Time and loop recording. The [Bullet Time guide](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/onex2/en-us/operating%5Ftutorials/capture-preview/shooting-mode/bullet-time?ref=gothru.co) warns that low light can force slower shutter speeds and motion blur. We do not infer special-mode frame rates from the ordinary video table. A sped-up moving sequence is also different from a set of dated, separately navigable construction panoramas.

The [hardware table](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x4/en-us/specs/hardware?ref=gothru.co) uses High bitrate for the X3 runtime test and Standard bitrate with additional processing disabled for the X5\. These are not controlled head-to-head endurance results. X5's advertised 208 minutes uses 5.7K24 Endurance Mode, not ordinary 8K recording. Its fast-charge claim assumes a compatible 30 W PD3.0 PPS charger, camera off and laboratory conditions.

## Why repairability can matter more than a headline number

The X5 documents user-replaceable lenses. The X3's adhesive lens guards protect the original lenses but do not provide the same documented replacement feature. For a traveling operator, this changes the maintenance plan: budget for compatible parts and learn the manufacturer's procedure before depending on an on-location repair.

Protection still affects the optical path. Check reflections and seams with the exact guards used on the job. Waterproof depth assumes the manufacturer's closure and operating conditions; it is not a promise of good underwater stitching or approval for hazardous construction environments.

## An older editing phone may be the hidden upgrade cost

The X3 product page lists A11 with iOS 13 as its Apple baseline and Android examples starting with Snapdragon 845, Kirin 980 and Exynos 9810\. X5 lists A12 with iOS 13, or Android examples starting with Snapdragon 855, Kirin 990 and Exynos 2200, with Android 10 or HarmonyOS 2\. X5 also excludes HarmonyOS NEXT.

Both pages require a 64-bit phone system and warn against SDM765 5G decoding limitations. These published baselines do not guarantee every current app feature or smooth 8K editing. Test a representative X5 file on the phone you actually travel with. A connection that works for shutter control may still leave you waiting for exports.

## Choose against the work you deliver

**Property tours:** keep the acceptance test centered on dedicated still panoramas. An X3 that already meets the client standard is not automatically obsolete; an X5 should justify the change through the finished room and processing time.

**Construction:** make an overlapping reference visit before retiring the X3\. Keep viewpoint IDs, camera height and processing notes consistent so a camera change is not confused with a site change. Our [construction-site virtual-tour guide](https://gothru.co/360-cameras/construction-site-virtual-tours/) covers the wider workflow. Neither model is presented as a survey instrument.

**Travel:** X5's video options and repairable lenses are practical reasons to investigate the newer kit. Archive complete panoramas for owner-operated [Panorra](https://panorra.com/?ref=gothru.co) storytelling alongside reframed clips. We do not claim a verified direct camera-to-platform integration.
