Legacy camera guide · Original Insta360 Nano

The original Nano made spherical photography approachable by attaching to an iPhone. For a business considering one today, the important questions are less nostalgic: can you still control it, retrieve a complete panorama and deliver enough detail for the job?

**Research disclosure:** This is a source-based assessment, not our hands-on test. It covers the original Nano, not the higher-specification Nano S. Current app installation and tour-platform uploads have not been tested.

## Our assessment: test an existing kit; be cautious about buying one

Source metadata identifies Insta360 Nano and a 3040 × 1520 file. Original unchanged; displayed smaller. An independently made example, not our test, an unprocessed-file claim or an HDR demonstration.

For an owner with a working phone-and-camera combination, the Nano can be evaluated as a basic visual-record tool. We would not build a new property-photography service around it without first demonstrating the complete workflow and obtaining client approval of representative interiors. A low used price does not account for time spent maintaining an older phone or recovering files.

Its strongest historical attraction was convenient capture. That is different from delivering detailed room panoramas, balanced windows and clean seams on a repeatable commercial schedule. The buying decision should follow a finished tour, not a seller's demonstration that the camera powers on.

## Why 3040 pixels across a sphere is a modest detail budget

### Horizontal equirectangular sampling budget

Full 360° panorama — **3040 source pixels**

90° longitude span — **760 source pixels**

Calculated, zero-baseline illustration: 3040 × 90/360 = 760\. The smaller bar describes a longitude span in the source image, not the rendered dimensions of a perspective viewport. It is not a measured sharpness result.

A viewer usually examines one direction at a time. Spreading the available pixels around the entire room limits the source information available for that direction; enlarging the displayed view does not create captured detail. Projection, stitching, optics and compression also affect the result. For a tour, inspect furniture edges and fixtures at the intended viewing size, rather than judging a small thumbnail of the complete sphere.

## An older iPhone list is not a current compatibility guarantee

The official FAQ lists iPhone 6/6 Plus, 6S/6S Plus, 7/7 Plus, 8/8 Plus, X, XS, XS Max and XR. It explicitly excludes iPhone 5/5s/5c/SE and iPad. This historical list should not be generalized to later devices bearing similar names.

Before buying, verify the exact phone, operating-system version, app installation and physical fit. Do not assume a connector adapter resolves software compatibility. Ask to take a new photograph and export it using the equipment you will actually keep—not only the seller's phone.

**Current listing check:** the [US App Store page](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/insta360-nano/id1101189364?ref=gothru.co) remains accessible as of 21 September 2026\. It lists version 2.7.1 dated 30 October 2021 and requires iOS 10.2 or later. Its software compatibility list is broader than the camera FAQ's hardware list. Being listed as able to run the app is not proof that a device can physically attach to, recognize or operate the Nano. We have not installed the app or verified availability for every account or region.

## What firsthand reviewers found

In [Sam Kieldsen's original 2016 Stuff review](https://www.stuff.tv/review/insta360-nano-review/?ref=gothru.co), direct phone connection made the Nano easy to operate. He found fine detail limited and reported flare and distortion, although stitching impressed him. A lens scratch acquired during his review became visible in photographs and video. These are observations about his sample, not our measurements or a failure-rate study.

[Ben Claremont revisited the Nano in an October 2024 podcast](https://www.benclaremont.com/podcasts/full-time-youtuber-3/episodes/2148959906?ref=gothru.co). He described receiving the camera free from Insta360, his enthusiasm for its phone-connected concept at the time, and his much less favorable view of its quality in retrospect. That is useful historical context, not a controlled modern indoor comparison.

Our interpretation is to separate convenience from image suitability. For a property commission, neither a favorable launch-era verdict nor a later dismissive comparison replaces inspection of a finished interior panorama.

In the independently made church panorama above, the windows are much brighter than the pews and floor, and the flattened full-sphere projection stretches the ceiling. Use it as an example of the kind of scene the Nano can record, not as a controlled dynamic-range comparison. The creator's exposure settings and processing history have not been established here.

## A documented way to leave the phone out of the capture

Insta360's [original Nano timed-photo tutorial](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/nano/en-us/camera/timedphoto?ref=gothru.co) describes enabling timed photos and setting the delay while attached to a compatible iPhone. After disconnecting, turn on the camera and triple-press its power button to trigger the countdown; the indicator returns to green when capture finishes. This offers a documented standalone capture route, but initial configuration still depends on a working phone-and-app combination.

For a room tour, test that sequence on a secure support and give yourself time to leave the scene. Confirm a newly saved still before repeating the process across a property. The tutorial ends with an inconsistent reference to a time-lapse video; this guide does not infer a time-lapse feature from that sentence or claim the workflow was tested on current software.

## Export a sphere, not a social preview

[Insta360's export instructions](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/nano/en-us/faq/exporting?ref=gothru.co) describe opening the image in the Nano app's Album, choosing Share and then the panorama option to save it to the iPhone album. They also describe accessing files on a computer using the microSD card and a card reader.

Keep a separate copy of the original files before processing. Check that the deliverable contains the complete sphere rather than a screenshot, tiny-planet view or flat crop. A file that opens locally is only the first checkpoint: the hosted tour must also show correct orientation and navigation.

[GoThru](https://gothru.co/?ref=gothru.co) operates this publication. This guide does not claim a completed Nano upload or integration test. Prove that route before accepting a paid assignment.

## A focused acceptance test for real-estate photography

1. **Inspect both lenses.** Look for marks and photograph a scene with a bright light source to reveal distracting artifacts.
2. **Test a windowed room.** Examine both outdoor highlights and darker interior areas. This guide does not establish a verified Nano automatic-bracketing or RAW workflow.
3. **Inspect close geometry.** Put door frames and furniture near the seam in a test shot, then adjust the camera position if necessary.
4. **Evaluate operator removal.** Demonstrate the actual support and triggering arrangement; attached-phone convenience alone does not keep the photographer out of the sphere.
5. **Deliver a sample.** Obtain approval of a hosted panorama at the expected desktop and mobile viewing sizes.

## Construction-site tours: context, not inspection detail

For progress records, use [named viewpoints](https://gothru.co/360-cameras/construction-site-virtual-tours/) and record the date and approximate camera height. Repeat those positions when safe access allows, and document deviations. This supports understandable comparisons without claiming precise geometric alignment.

The modest source resolution makes a separate detail-photo record particularly important for labels, fittings and individual components. A broad room view should not be presented as proof that every installation is correct. Neither survey-grade measurement nor automated defect detection is established here.

No dust- or water-protection rating has been verified for this guide. Plan protection and handling accordingly; do not treat the camera's small metal body or a phone attachment as evidence of jobsite durability.

## Travel use and the final buying decision

The small camera may appeal to an existing owner documenting destinations, but protecting the lenses and confirming file retrieval should come before packing it for a trip. Test the full kit without relying on last-minute app downloads.

For destination storytelling through owner-operated [Panorra](https://panorra.com/?ref=gothru.co), preserve independent originals and inspect the final presentation. No Nano-specific Panorra integration has been tested.

Our conclusion is conditional: keep using a functioning kit if its finished output meets a defined need. For a new commercial purchase, require stronger evidence of dependable software and adequate interior detail before choosing the original Nano.

## Useful comparison paths for a Nano owner

| ------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Another phone-connected legacy camera | [Original Insta360 ONE](https://gothru.co/360-cameras/insta360-one/): investigate its still resolution and documented historical RAW workflow, with its own compatibility caveats. |
| A later standalone Insta360 workflow | [ONE X](https://gothru.co/360-cameras/insta360-one-x/): compare its HDR/RAW capture and desktop processing requirements. |
| JPEG-focused interior capture | [Theta SC2](https://gothru.co/360-cameras/ricoh-theta-sc2/): evaluate its room-photography workflow and phone support. |

These are suggested comparisons, not a tested ranking. Include the cost of keeping a compatible phone, lens protection, a stable support, storage and processing time. Test camera and phone battery endurance together before scheduling several properties or remote travel days.

Research checked 21 September 2026\. No hands-on score is assigned. Creator observations, the independently made sample and untested current compatibility are distinguished above.
