Technical comparison · Beyond the shared 8K label

Both cameras offer 8K spherical video and replaceable lenses. X6 adds larger listed still panoramas, internal recording storage and more high-resolution frame-rate choices. MAX2 brings GoPro's mounting and editing ecosystem plus optional Labs capture tools. The useful comparison is what each can deliver in your actual workflow.

**Research disclosure:** Manufacturer-documentation comparison checked 22 September 2026\. No matched sharpness, low-light, stitching, battery or thermal tests are claimed. Specifications are not benchmark scores; direct GoThru/Panorra compatibility has not been tested here.

## Start with the still-photo and video requirements

**If spherical RAW is required, X6 has the documented format route.** MAX2's RAW support applies to single-lens stills; its standard spherical formats and optional Labs JPEG bracketing must not be described as equivalent RAW capture. X6's own format support also depends on mode, so confirm the intended settings rather than assuming every 120 MP option produces DNG.

**If video is the priority, compare dimensions and frame rates together.** X6 lists ordinary 8K up to 50 fps, while MAX2 lists up to 30\. Their lower modes labelled 4K have different frame dimensions. Neither a larger sensor-format label nor a higher bitrate proves a universal image-quality winner.

### Largest listed panorama width

X6 — **15,520 pixels**

MAX2 — **7,680 pixels**

Zero-baseline file-dimension chart. X6's panorama is about 2.02 times as wide, not proven twice as sharp. Optics, exposure, processing, stitching and final viewing size still matter.

## RAW, AEB and optional Labs processing

X6's [format guide](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x6/en-us/operating-tutorials/storage/fileformat?ref=gothru.co) separates PureShot from PureShot + RAW. The latter adds DNG; the former can use INSP or in-camera-stitched JPG. Its app and Studio export routes differ, and the format inventory is not a complete resolution-by-format matrix.

The [X6 AEB guide](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x6/en-us/operating-tutorials/capture-preview/parameters/aeb?ref=gothru.co) allows three or five exposures at 120 MP; seven requires 30 MP. That is a practical choice between sequence length and output dimensions, not proof that the longest bracket is best for every room.

[GoPro Labs BRKT](https://gopro.github.io/labs/control/bracket/?ref=gothru.co) supports selected exposure positions from −4 to +4 EV, up to nine positions, with MAX2 set to JPG rather than .36P. Triggering uses a physical shutter or compatible BLE remote, not Quik. Its RAW instruction applies to single-lens capture; optional renaming hides files from camera/Quik playback and the preset prevents automatic shutdown.

The separate [Labs HDRI tool](https://gopro.github.io/labs/control/hdri/?ref=gothru.co) merges JPEG exposures into .HDR for lighting applications. Its page describes up to eleven two-stop exposures but retains nine-shot timing text later. Verify the script instead of promising a fixed capture duration. A lighting HDRI needs an appropriate tone-mapped export for a conventional tour, and is not a native RAW master.

Test a difficult interior with the same tripod position and final panorama dimensions. Inspect bright windows, shadow texture, seam transitions and moving people. Time the entire capture-to-delivery process; comparing an automatic photo with a carefully processed multi-exposure sequence would not isolate camera performance.

GoPro's [25 June 2026 announcement](https://investor.gopro.com/press-releases/press-release-details/2026/GoPro-Elevates-Award-Winning-MAX2-360-Camera-Image-Quality-with-Powerful-New-Firmware-Update/default.aspx?ref=gothru.co) assigns the 200 Mbps ceiling to 8K spherical and 4K single-lens recording. Keep this distinct from launch documentation and optional Labs claims. X6's 240 Mbps high-bitrate 8K TimeShift/timelapse and 360 Mbps 16K timelapse values are not its ordinary-video ceiling.

X6's 6K PureVideo dimensions conflict: 5760 × 2880 in the shared manual versus 6016 × 3008 on the product page. Check actual firmware output. Neither a bitrate difference nor a low-light mode name establishes the cleaner result for moving subjects.

The same GoPro June update adds 10-bit and GP-Log across TimeWarp, Night Effects, Time Lapse and Night Lapse. It also describes a 50/60 Hz anti-flicker switch and single-lens Blur Reduction. These firmware additions should not be omitted when interpreting launch-era limits, or mistaken for a matched low-light test.

| Timelapse | Spherical 8K30/5.6K30; standard 29 MP photo sequences also listed | 15360 × 7680 or 7680 × 3840 at 25/30 playback fps |
| Moving timelapse | TimeWarp: spherical 8K30/5.6K30; flat 4K30/1080p30 | TimeShift; separate high-bitrate options |
| Bullet Time | Equivalent mode not established | 7680 × 1920 at 100; 6016 × 1504 at 120; 3840 × 960 at 240 |

X6's narrow Bullet Time frames are not complete ordinary spheres. Its 16K timelapse requires Studio for preview/edit/export and is not ordinary 16K video. MAX2's POV/Selfie presentation should not be mistaken for a recording that discards everything outside the selected view.

X6's product page lists portrait 4K/2.7K up to 120 fps, whereas the manual lists 60; flat-only InstaFrame reaches 60 in the manual but 30 on the product page. Neither source should be combined with the other to promise 8K60 spherical backup. Its nominal 9:16 4K manual row also repeats 2880 × 3840, which is not a 9:16 frame. Verify actual output before committing to that delivery format.

MAX2's flat 4K dimensions are 3840 × 2160, 2160 × 3840 or 4000 × 3000; 1080p is 1920 × 1080 or 1080 × 1920\. X6's landscape 5K options are 5120 × 3840 or 5120 × 2880; 4K is 3840 × 2880 or 3840 × 2160; 2.7K is 2688 × 2016 or 2688 × 1520\. Mode names alone conceal different frame shapes.

The [X6 timelapse guide](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x4/en-us/operating%5Ftutorials/capture-preview/shooting-mode/timelapse?ref=gothru.co) lists Off and 0.5/1/2/5/10/15/30/60/120-second intervals, with resolution-dependent availability. MAX2's 29 MP burst options are 5 or 10 frames in one second, 10 or 30 in three seconds, or 30 in six seconds. Its Star Trails, Light Painting and Vehicle Lights output spherical 8K30 or 5.6K30.

X6's [HDR guide](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x6/en-us/operating-tutorials/capture-preview/shooting-mode/hdr?ref=gothru.co) applies Active HDR automatically to ordinary 360 Video and InstaFrame, while flat 5K and flat zoom from 1× to 1.2× are excluded. X6 lists FlowState and 360° Horizon Lock; MAX2 lists Max HyperSmooth and 360 Horizon Lock. Compare a common walking route before assigning a stabilization winner.

Sources: MAX2 technical panel and [Insta360 hardware table](https://onlinemanual.insta360.com/x4/en-us/specs/hardware?ref=gothru.co). GoPro labels wireless Wi-Fi 6 but omits ax from its protocol list. X6's Japanese launch release calls USB 3.0 while its hardware manual says 3.1\. Neither discrepancy is resolved here by inventing a transfer-speed result.

[GoPro's comparison tool with MAX2 selected](https://gopro.com/en/us/compare?ref=gothru.co) quotes approximately one hour to 80% and two hours to full charge at 3 A/15 W. X6 lists 24 minutes to 80% and 35 to full with 30 W PD 3.0 PPS power, camera off at 25°C. Charging speed is not battery runtime.

X6 quotes 140 minutes at 8K30, 79 at 8K50 and 170 at 6K30 using Standard bitrate/color, screen off and Wi-Fi on at 25°C. An equivalent mode-specific MAX2 runtime has not been established here. Do not infer endurance from mAh or treat different manufacturer test conditions as a controlled shootout.

## Editing, offload and kit compatibility

Resized without cropping; not our test, a matched X6 sample or evidence of a particular HDR/RAW capture method.

MAX2 has six microphones, stereo/360 audio and Bluetooth audio; separate WAV capture is single-lens only. X6 lists 48 kHz, 16-bit AAC and several audio-processing modes. Microphone count and mode names do not establish better speech in machinery or wind; test the actual site soundscape.

[GoPro Player](https://gopro.com/en/us/info/gopro-player?ref=gothru.co) offers reframing and batch export and lists macOS 10.14 or Windows 10 with HEVC-capable graphics guidance. Its HyperSmooth Pro feature explicitly excludes 360 content; that is separate from MAX2's in-camera stabilization. Quik provides the mobile route, but a current MAX2-specific phone-performance baseline is not established here.

X6's product page lists A14/iOS 16 or supported Android chipset examples including Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Kirin 9000, Android 10/HarmonyOS 2 and a 64-bit system. SDM765 is excluded, and the Exynos 2200 listing conflicts with a decoding exclusion. Check the exact handset and intended feature rather than assuming successful app installation guarantees 8K export.

Both cameras provide lens-replacement options, but parts and procedures are model-specific. Compare the complete kit: protection, supports, batteries, cards, software and operator time. Internal storage is useful contingency capacity, not an independent backup.

## Real estate, construction and travel

**Real estate:** X6 provides the more directly documented spherical RAW route. Test capture, development, seams and the final tour upload before turning that format advantage into a blanket image-quality verdict. MAX2's optional JPEG/HDRI workflow may suit a different brief but requires separate validation.

**Construction:** internal storage, removable batteries and repairable lenses address different failure scenarios.
