Owner reports · Checked 22 September 2026

Recurring MAX2 owner complaints include heat-related recording interruptions, visible stitching artifacts, disappointing underwater results and historical cloud-upload failures. The details matter: different shooting conditions and software versions can produce very different experiences. This article covers GoPro MAX2, not the original MAX or the 2025 MAX refresh.

**Research disclosure:** This is a review of public Reddit owner reports, not our own camera testing. Each included complaint has at least two distinct owners. Reposts, advice and hearsay do not count. Reddit is not a failure-rate survey, and historical reports do not establish that every issue persists with current software. We preserve reported improvements and contrary experiences.

## Heat-related recording interruptions

One MAX2 owner describes repeated thermal shutdown messages during an outdoor fair, initially after about 16 minutes, despite shooting in shade. Another explicitly identifies their MAX2 and reports overheating without strong airflow, including in cold weather; their recording mode is unspecified. Sources: [fair recording report](https://www.reddit.com/r/gopro/comments/1nziztr/disappoint%5Fwith%5Fmax%5F2/?ref=gothru.co) and [post-release owner experience in the overheating discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/gopro/comments/1mkxuv2/gopro%5Fmax%5F2%5Fmeassurements%5Fagainst%5Foverheating/?ref=gothru.co). The second thread began before release: its initial speculation does not count as an owner test.

A third MAX2 owner reports overheating and shutdowns after approximately 15 minutes in [this shutdown discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/gopro/comments/1sb1u4m/help%5Fmy%5Fmax%5F2%5Fkeeps%5Fshutting%5Foff%5Frandomly/?ref=gothru.co). Settings and environment are missing from that reply. The original poster's much earlier random stops are not automatically the same thermal failure merely because the camera felt hot.

Experiences differ. An owner in [this MAX2 discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/gopro/comments/1o93af7/max%5F2%5Flooks%5Fcool%5Fbut%5Fthe%5Freviews%5Fmake%5Fme%5Fhesitate/?ref=gothru.co) reports regularly recording for more than 30 minutes without overheating during motorcycle and paragliding use with airflow. None of these accounts establishes a universal recording limit or guarantees that moving the camera prevents shutdowns.

GoPro's [MAX2 manual](https://static.gopro.com/assets/blta2b8522e5372af40/blte32e2783ff44e36a/68c27e50d9e51a0e3481b803/MAX2%5FUM%5Fen-US%5FREVA.pdf?ref=gothru.co) says the camera shuts down if it gets too hot and should cool before further use. Its operating-temperature range is not a guarantee of uninterrupted recording at every resolution and mounting arrangement.

## Visible stitching artifacts and seam dissatisfaction

An owner who moved from an Insta360 X3 to a MAX2 describes disappointing lens stitching and exposure that does not always match. A separate MAX2 owner complains that objects become distorted along the seam. Sources: [owner's stitching and exposure account](https://www.reddit.com/r/gopro/comments/1r8jonv/best%5F360%5Fneed%5Fadvice%5Fasap/?ref=gothru.co) and [independent seam-artifact report](https://www.reddit.com/r/gopro/comments/1r03ixq/interested%5Fin%5Fa%5F360%5Fcamera%5Fand%5Fcant%5Fdecide%5Fwhich/?ref=gothru.co).

These are first-person complaints about the finished image, not evidence of a shared lens defect. Subject distance, scene detail and software versions are not consistently documented. The second owner also reports grain improving after changing ISO settings, but does not say that this fixed the stitching. Those two symptoms should not be combined into one diagnosis.

GoPro subsequently documented optional Labs controls for [stitch-depth locking and smoothing](https://gopro.com/en/gb/news/max2-gopro-labs-nov-2025?ref=gothru.co). These controls change how stitching responds to a scene; their availability is not proof that the owners above obtained a fix. Check the software and recording workflow behind a report before treating it as a description of every current MAX2.

## Disappointing underwater stitching

Two owners describe disappointing underwater 360 results, but with different setups. One new MAX2 owner says the two lens views do not join correctly underwater. Another used an Amazon-sourced dive case in Bali and reports poor images and stitching, with the recording mode described as 5.6K30\. Sources: [underwater stitching question](https://www.reddit.com/r/gopro/comments/1odz4w0/gopro%5Fmax%5F2%5Funderwater%5Ffootage/?ref=gothru.co) and [dive-case owner's experience](https://www.reddit.com/r/gopro/comments/1w2diq0/max2%5Fdive%5Fcase/?ref=gothru.co).

This belongs under underwater image-quality limitations, not water damage or a shared manufacturing fault. GoPro's [MAX2 manual, printed page 45](https://static.gopro.com/assets/blta2b8522e5372af40/blte32e2783ff44e36a/68c27e50d9e51a0e3481b803/MAX2%5FUM%5Fen-US%5FREVA.pdf?ref=gothru.co) distinguishes its 5 m waterproof rating with the door locked from suitability for underwater imaging: it warns of underwater image distortion. The second report does not identify enough detail to evaluate every dive housing, and neither thread establishes a confirmed fix. Waterproofing alone does not establish that underwater 360 images will stitch cleanly.

## Historical cloud auto-upload failures

Two MAX2 owners in [this cloud-upload discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/gopro/comments/1qe8967/autoupload%5Fto%5Fgopro%5Fcloud%5Fissues%5Ffor%5Fcameras/?ref=gothru.co) describe trouble using automatic uploads. The original poster explicitly identifies a MAX2 that appeared configured but returned an upload error. Another MAX2 owner describes resorting to a card reader and manual web uploads, disrupting an iPad-based workflow.

The original poster later reports that GoPro investigated and applied a backend fix to their account. The second owner's final outcome is not shown. This is a historical service complaint, not evidence that every MAX2 still cannot auto-upload. Claims in the discussion about which registration dates were affected are owner interpretations, not an independently verified scope of the incident. Reports about HERO13 cameras are not counted as extra MAX2 owners.

## What these reports do—and do not—establish

The evidence reviewed does not establish a model-wide lens-fogging, storage-corruption or power-on defect. That is a limit of the evidence, not a claim that no owner has experienced those problems. We also do not merge a mobile memory error, a desktop export crash and a faulty transfer accessory into one supposed camera defect.

For a travel shoot or a long recording, test the whole workflow beforehand: your recording mode, mounting position, phone or computer, export resolution and cloud upload. Keep original media backed up before troubleshooting. When contacting support, include firmware and app versions, card details, recording settings and the exact error message. A short successful preview does not establish that a full-resolution export will work.
